To Thailand by way of the world

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 27/05/2016

» When asked which photograph among his deep portfolio is his favourite, former chief photographer for the Associated Press of Southeast Asia David Longstreath recalled a picture he took of a boy standing in front of the chapel that held Mother Teresa's funeral in Calcutta, India.

Now You See Me 2 well worth a look

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 10/06/2016

» The original Now You See Me, directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Clash Of The Titans) and released in 2013, was a pleasant surprise. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffolo and Morgan Freeman, the "Four Horsemen" of Las Vegas magicians from the original film became one of Lionsgate Entertainment's most successful features, delighting audiences with a smart, confidently-executed mixture of fantasy and heist movie.

Hijabs rocking to the funky, funky beats

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 17/09/2015

» You could almost smell the collective excitement and youthful energy emanating from the nearly 20,000 gathered at Sunway Lagoon, the water park and resort (and shopping mall, university, etc.) -- the site of this year's MTV World Stage concert, which took place in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

Pales in comparison to the original

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 04/09/2015

» The original The Transporter series will always have a place in my heart as one of the most entertaining action flicks of all time. Jason Statham's portrayal of the mysterious Frank Martin appealed to me with his deadpan humour and silent, threatening stares, not to mention his borderline mythic skills with the wheel.

Singapore's big designs on design dominance

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 05/04/2018

» Last month, Singapore held its fifth annual Design Week. An amalgamation of discussion panels, city and neighbourhood tours and numerous furniture and design exhibitions with over 90 programmes available across the city-state, the event is an affirmation of the country's new dedication towards creativity as it aims to become a "thriving innovation-driven economy and a lovable city through design by 2025", becoming the design hub of Asia and even the world.

Red Sparrow never quite takes flight

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 02/03/2018

» Some stories are just told in the wrong medium. We've all come across one at some point; a series that feels like it could've been told in two compact hours, or a film that lays down so much groundwork for interesting developments that it simply can't give every subplot the necessary room to grow. Red Sparrow, the new spy thriller from director Francis Lawrence, falls into the latter category. With its gripping and violent story of espionage and sex, bolstered by an all-star cast of award-winning actors, Red Sparrow's downfall is the fact that there simply isn't enough room in its considerable run-time -- well over two hours -- to do its own world justice.

    Making it rain

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 21/02/2018

» On 20 July, 1969, Thailand underwent its first ever test run of the Royal Rainmaking Project. Initiated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1955, the project is one of the late king's most recognised achievements, bringing rain to thousands of drought-stricken Thai farmers.

A nation of ever elusive justice

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 26/02/2018

» Earlier this week, a video clip was circulated heavily on social media showing a middle-aged woman going to town on a white pickup truck with a hatchet. As it turns out, the truck was parked -- handbrakes and all -- in front of her home, blocking the one point of entry and exit she had, while the owner shopped at one of the many markets surrounding her home. Comments on social media initially criticised the woman for what seemed like extreme overreaction.

Love is waiting in the cloud

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 14/02/2018

» Once perceived as the domain of shady foreigners looking for local women, internet dating hasn't been the sweetest Valentine's rose for many. But since a decade ago, when matchmaking sites first came to Thailand, and as social media continue as a standard mode communication, the relationship between the internet and dating has changed.

High energy in a small space

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 31/01/2018

» As technology continues to render computer components smaller and smaller, the need to compromise between portability and power is rendered increasingly moot. The 2017 model of the HP Spectre x360 is a paragon of this idea, seamlessly incorporating 4K-capable processing power with a body barely over a kilo in weight. While the review unit I received had some issues maintaining battery life after a while -- no doubt due to the 4K screen -- the overall experience, including the touchpad, keyboard and even the touchscreen-controlled tablet mode are better than any convertible of this size I've ever experienced. It's certainly the most powerful, too.
