The Canal Protection Act of 1941 noted that Bangkok east of the Chao Phraya River, the area officially called Phra Nakhon, had a total of 64 canals while the portion of the metropolis lying on the west bank, Thon Buri, was served by 31 canals. However, in the interim, many of these have been filled in and built over or have become so silted up they are now too shallow to be navigable.

As we set off on a sight-seeing trip along the Chao Phraya, the prow of our chartered boat kicked up a refreshing spray of fine water droplets from the surface of the river. We had all been invited to take part in one of the annual boat excursions organised by Nakhon Nonthaburi Municipality and throughout the day we would we hopping on and off this vessel to visit historic and cultural attractions, including several temples featuring fine examples of art and architecture from the Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods.

Lychees from Samut Songkhram province are famed for their sweetness. The most popular strain is khom, which bears a sweet, crunchy heart-shaped fruit covered with a dark red peel. Orchards here yield a total of 6,000 tonnes of lychees per year.
