» In the eXtensions column last Wednesday, one of the applications I mentioned was Pixelmator. I wrote then that this was available for the Mac and the iPad. The next day (Thursday) the developers updated the iOS app making it Universal, so it now runs on the iPhone as well.

Arrivals: Apple Music and a MacBook
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 08/07/2015
» Last Tuesday evening, Apple updated iOS8 and OS X to include the latest versions of Music and iTunes to bring Apple Music to users. I updated my iOS devices first and signed up for the three-month free trial. The fee for users here is $4.99. Lower rates than the US rate apply in other countries, too. Some images that came with advertisements for Apple Music indicate new colours for iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod touch.

» Last week Apple updated its MacBook Pro range, adding a new 27-inch iMac with retina 5K display for 68,900 baht and reducing the price of the top end 5k iMac to 79,900 baht. There was also a lightning dock for iPhones. The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro computers have the new Force Touch trackpad and there are improvements: faster flash storage, longer battery life and faster discrete graphics. The SSD in the 15-inch MacBook Pro has throughput speeds of 2GB per second.

» Last week, Apple opened Apple Watch order books. Most models now have a delivery date of June. Some may suggest that this is Cupertino under-ordering to create a false shortage. It may not be until July or August that the watch appears here.

» Next week, Apple will announce its Q2 2015 figures on April 27 at 2pm Cupertino Time (4am Thai time). Usually, this quarter is lower than the one at the end of the year, but sales of iPhones in China and elsewhere are reported to have boosted the numbers. Estimates of iPhone sales run between 57 and 70 million units. Figures are now being maintained throughout the year rather than being seasonal.

Integrating the Mac mini
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 13/05/2015
» A few years ago some of my students asked me why I liked BMW motorcycles and Macs. The answer was easy: design and engineering. Sometimes what you cannot see is important. I stopped riding a while ago, but I might now add integration as a reason. This is a major (and evolving) factor with the Apple products I use on a day-to-day basis.

Metadata apps for the iPhone

» A note first on security for Mac users, taking a hint from the Windows side. Recently, Anthony M. Freed wrote on dark matter, "Analysis of Microsoft Patch Tuesday releases from last year reveals that 97% of the critical vulnerabilities patched could be mitigated by removing administrative rights for users, according to the 2014 Microsoft Vulnerabilities Report". Most Mac users still work in admin accounts, whereas those who work in user accounts in OS X (I always work this way) have an extra layer of protection.

Backup or else
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 18/03/2015
» I am minimising comments on the Apple Watch this week. There are plenty of articles already out there: choose wisely. The Watch will be on sale in some countries from April 24. Prices range from $349 (11,460 baht) to $17,000. The one that I am interested in would cost me $699: about 25,000 baht if it arrives in Thailand.
