Why China muzzled an internet sensation
News, Adam Minter, Published on 26/04/2016
» Last autumn, Papi Jiang, a 29-year-old graduate student in Beijing, began posting short, satirical and occasionally profane monologues about daily life in urban China to social media. Within a couple of months, she'd racked up tens of millions of views, earned nearly US$2 million (70 million baht) in private funding and raised hopes that online celebrities might offer a new revenue stream for China's internet companies. Then, last week, it all ended: Papi Jiang's videos abruptly disappeared.

New narrative needed on getting rich
News, Paritta Wangkiat, Published on 17/01/2022
» Tips on how to get rich and succeed in business, if not in life itself, are rife in Thai social media, such advice having already occupied bestseller lists in local bookstores for years.

Sanctioned deaths
News, Postbag, Published on 25/02/2016
» In your editorial "Officials in a haze", (BP, Feb 23), concerning the smoke haze in northern Thailand that has been increasing since 2007, you pin most of the blame on large agro-companies burning vegetated land to clear it for corn plantations, and the accompanying ill-effects on people's health.

Of me, my wellness and ThaiHealth
News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 21/01/2016
» The name "ThaiHealth" (Thai Health Foundation), a public organisation well oiled by "sin taxes" from cigarettes and alcohol companies, has become the talk of the town. The glare of the spotlight came early this month when Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha invoked Section 44 of the interim charter to sack seven of its board members for alleged "conflicts of interest".

A plea for tradition
Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 25/10/2021
» When was the last time we went to a movie theatre? While most cinemas have reopened following months of pandemic-forced closures, I doubt moviegoers are ready to return en masse. As a movie critic who's been mainly working from home for the last 15 months, I miss the ambience of cinema -- the smell of popcorn, the posters advertising coming attractions or the greats of cinema's glory years. I miss finally watching that film on the big screen in darkness, the chilly atmosphere and surround sound that created an immersive experience that can't be replicated in a living room.

Covid's ocean wake-up call
News, Editorial, Published on 08/06/2021
» Today is World Oceans Day, although judging from the state our marine environment finds itself in, it is more of a nod to its state of perdition than a celebration of mankind's enduring relationship with the Seven Seas.

Taxi Timeline
Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 11/06/2021
» Taxi service in Thailand is about to enter a new drive after the Cabinet recently approved a draft regulation to allow the use of private cars for transport apps. The draft by the Ministry of Transport is expected to be put to use this month or within July. When enacted, vehicles with up to seven seats that are registered as personal cars can double as taxis via the apps.

A just post-pandemic transition
Oped, Published on 24/07/2020
» It will take time for Covid-19's economic consequences to come into full view. But some of the costs are already becoming apparent, beginning with the devastation the crisis will wreak on the global workforce. With climate change also threatening to hurt the world's most vulnerable workers, the need for a holistic crisis response that emphasises both justice and sustainability could not be greater.

Can Thailand's vibrant media be self-regulated?
Oped, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 06/07/2021
» Exactly 24 years ago this week, some 40-plus publishers and editors from all over Thailand came together to form the National Press Council to challenge the government of the day, which was trying to control them through regulatory measures. The council has since then used "social and peer pressure" and its code of ethics to maintain media professionalism. It has also served as a pillar for the Thai media to preserve freedom of expression.

A country so different to anywhere else
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/08/2021
» The dramatic events in Afghanistan inevitably sparked memories of my own brief experiences of the country more than 50 years ago while on an overland trip from London to New Delhi and beyond.
