LIFE

In the mood for food

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/05/2015

» We here at Guru love us some wordplay (especially when it’s naughty). Punch “5318008” into a calculator and turn it upside down to spell a certain part of female anatomy. Rearrange “dog food lid” backwards (with the right spacing) and you’ll get a NSFW phrase. And remember that time you meant to type “see” on a keyboard, but had forgotten to switch from Thai to English? So when we saw the logo of MOODZ, a five-month-old restaurant at the mouth of Thong Lor Soi 10, we channelled our inner Robert Langdon and discovered the word’s upside-down reflection is “WOODS” — the name of another project by the same management team. The restaurant’s interior feels grown-up with a retro touch, but by no means comes across dated. Turquoise walls make other decorative details pop, from the checkered floor to the custom-made chandeliers. The sophisticated indoor area is perfect for an eye-locking, romantic dinner between lovebirds, while the rattan seats outside create a nice setting for shooting the breeze and people watching. The patrons here are expats, couples on date nights and after-work Thai execs. MOODZ also sees families on Sundays.

Asian al dente

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/07/2014

» If the idea of pasta dishes with Thai twists doesn’t pique your appetite anymore, I am Thai Pasta may change that with their 19 Thai-ified spaghetti dishes. The restaurant’s interior gives a contemporary Thai feel with flower motifs on the wall. The place looks inviting, being lit up in a golden hue. Sit at a window-side couch so you can utilise the natural light for your IG moments during the day or eat with a view of nearby buildings at night. Given the location, groups of students and office workers make up the majority of customers during weekdays while the weekends see families and friends.

Taste and table

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 30/05/2014

» Sukhumvit is a hub of hotel dining with many options to choose from. Opened on May 1, Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok is the new kid on the block and currently offers five restaurants and bars (with two more to come), one of which is China Table. With many sqms and a ceiling high enough to even accommodate a lion dance, the restaurant exudes a spacious and airy feel, befitting a special lunch or dinner event more than a normal meal. It has a good yin-yang design that offers Chinese flair without being too gaudy. Natural light floods the space, brightening up vases, urns and tea sets on shelves as well as other impressive decor details. Get comfy on the plush couch or sit on a high chair from where you can view traditional tea making. The majority of patrons are Asian tourists and expats.

Up in the air

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/02/2014

» Given the many rooftop places in Bangkok, finding a good one is like figuring out which of the zillions of cars on the street below belongs to your friend from the height of 30-something floors with your naked eye. Zoom is the latest entry to the high-altitude market and it proves to be worth the 40-floor elevator ride to get there. Decor-wise, Zoom keeps it minimal and modern as if not to compete with the mesmerising panoramic view of the city below. The open-air venue offers three zones. For an intimate LED-lit dinner, we recommend the lower level where you can lounge on big comfy couches. Head upstairs to the bar to get your drink on. The patrons are mostly hotel guests and execs in the area.
