Back to the future in our political models
News, Suranand Vejjajiva, Published on 06/09/2016
» T wo political models are presently being cited by supporters of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as vehicles for his continuation as premier after the general election of 2017. One is the so-called "Prem Model", a reference to the era of Gen Prem Tinsulanonda who was prime minister between 1980 to 1988. The other is the setting up of a military-backed political party to become the core in the formation of the next government.

Pokemon goes on run from state capture
News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 13/08/2016
» No, they will not ban Pokemon Go, though it's not hard to tell how tempting that idea must be in the post-referendum landscape where peace, order and national security have been constitutionally enshrined.

Rules of the game
News, Postbag, Published on 10/08/2016
» If someone illegally takes control of a ship its called piracy and it's a very serious offence. When people interfere with the planned flight of an aircraft it's known as hijacking and carries a severe punishment. One would think an even greater offence would be the illegal ousting of an elected government by an armed group, commonly known as a coup d'etat which in some countries would carry the most extreme penalty.

Regime should exploit 'win' to forge unity
News, Suranand Vejjajiva, Published on 09/08/2016
» No wonder Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was confident when he announced he would vote "Yes" two days before the referendum on Sunday. The results confirmed what he might have known through internal polls. The draft constitution passed with 61.4% of the vote, compared to a "No" vote of 38.6% at the time of writing; official results could differ only a little. The voter turnout was 55%, or 27.6 million Thais who came out to cast their vote.

Voters in the dark about reform 'changes'
News, Surasak Glahan, Published on 06/08/2016
» Reform has become the buzz-word in the context of pre- and post-2014 coup Thailand. First, the defunct People's Democratic Reform Committee made a demand for national reform before elections. Since the military staged the coup, national reform has also been part of the key agenda of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). Now, the draft constitution that will be decided at the referendum tomorrow promises national reform as part of its key elements.
