» We all have to ring call centres to ask for help (or complain) from time to time. But navigating their sometimes labyrinthine, overly complicated systems can be frustrating. Call Zen, a mobile application recently launched on the App Store and Google Play, helps solve this conundrum. We speak with 30-year-old Pongpat Phukanud, the app's co-developer.

    Going somewhere? Go Green

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/03/2015

» As an actor, Pipat “Top” Apiruktanakorn, 35, has appeared on both the small and silver screens. But since 2009 he has also played another well-known role — that of an advocate for green lifestyles, opening Ecoshop, which sells eco-friendly yet well-designed products. Last year, it was reincarnated as Ecoshop Common (G/F, Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, Rama I Road, BTS National Stadium, fb.com/ecoshopcommon.bangkok), a combined retail shop and learning centre. To further enable people to embrace their greener side, Top last week launched a smartphone application called Ecolife. Here, Top speaks with us about the app, which is in English and currently available on the App Store and Google Play.

    Enzed offerings

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 05/09/2014

» Although Kai is named after the Maori word for food, you won't find indigenous offerings cooked in an earth oven here. Instead, the new restaurant serves a modern New Zealand menu in an industrial atmosphere. The manly mood is conveyed through a bare concrete floor, wood panelling, sturdy tables, metal pipe shelving and more. This spacious venue offers settings for different occasions from al fresco breakfast with a side of people-watching to hearty chow time with friends in the dining area to upstairs couches and booths that should allow you more privacy. We visited when Kai was just a few weeks old and the first floor wasn't ready yet. We are told that they will open for dinner by the end of this month. Office workers and condo dwellers in the area are among their initial customers.

    Sandwiches with swag

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/08/2014

» You know what the greatest thing since sliced bread is? Two slices of bread with goodies between them, aka sandwiches – that’s what. Since August is National Sandwich Month in the US, we think that’s good enough of an excuse to check out Harlem Shakers for some sandwiches with real swag. Looks-wise, the restaurant offers urban vibe. While some may dig the concrete floor, graffiti on the white walls, oil barrels for tables and wooden crates for chairs, it’s probably not the best idea to bring your date here (unless he/she’s a rapper). Harlem Shakers, which takes its name from the 2013 meme Harlem Shake, opened its doors in December and most of the patrons are expats.

    Facebook police

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/06/2014

» Haven’t we all used Facebook to complain about something we see as wrong at some stage? There are some Facebook pages created and dedicated to raising awareness on improper behaviour in public places that you may not be aware of. Check them out in case you want to share your frustration, see what not to do so you won’t end up on one of these pages, or at least get a laugh out of them.

    Not the news

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/01/2014

» We think we aren’t the only ones who have been glued to our smartphone screens of late, following updates regarding #BangkokShutdown on Twitter and whatnot. Amid the cascade of information and misinformation, one item caught our attention, like a crystal-encrusted golden whistle under the midday light. It was an item about nightlife giant Ku De Ta closing its doors after a series of “bad circumstances” over the past few months that were bad for business with the shutdown being the last straw.
