Web standard development in the pipeline

Life, James Hein, Published on 16/07/2014

» Samsung, Dell, Intel, Broadcom and others have started the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) with the aim of uniting on standards for internet development. Or, in their own words, “will seek to define a common communication framework based on industry standard technologies to wirelessly connect and intelligently manage the flow of information among devices, regardless of form factor, operating system or service provider” and “it is our intention to create a specification and an open source project that will allow interoperability for all types of devices and operating systems”. For the moment this announcement is about there is to it, with more information to follow later.

Get ready, this week is Apple-heavy

Life, James Hein, Published on 30/07/2014

» At a talk given at the recent Hackers On Planet Earth conference, Jonathan Zdziarski found a number of hidden surveillance tools hidden in the iOS operating system. One provides a back door that, while not wide open, is enough to gain access to the user’s address book, account info and other bits and pieces. In this case, you can get data out, but not back into the device. The retrieved data is in a raw format and needs additional processing. There is also an undocumented packet sniffer (com.apple.pcapd) that can log and export network traffic. These items have been actively updated by Apple, meaning they are not left over from testing.

Do I really need my new Galaxy S5?

Life, James Hein, Published on 06/08/2014

» I've had the Galaxy S5 for some time now and so far the experience has been a pleasant one. One of my first add-ons was a 0.3mm glass screen protector that when compared to an unadorned S5 provides better clarity and viewability outside. I always use a case of some kind just in case I drop the unit so the combination should protect my device from standard heights, I hope.

    Downfall of Chromebook dynasty?

Life, James Hein, Published on 20/08/2014

» First there was the netbook, then the Ultrabook. Now we have the Chromebook, of which the Gartner Group predicts sales will top 5 million units this year. If it is anything like the netbook, by 2017 people will be asking: "Chromebook? What is that?" Gartner missed predicting that the netbook bubble would burst, and I think they have made the same mistake here.

    Good old E-merica

Life, James Hein, Published on 03/09/2014

» One of the first things you notice when looking at anything computer-related in the US is that it is probably less expensive there than where you come from. The second thing you notice is that you can order nearly anything — and if you pay a little extra, can have one delivered in a couple of days, even faster if you pay a little more. All of those "we can't ship this product to your address" messages also vanish. The world of online ordering becomes completely open to you.

    Watch this? Maybe not

Life, James Hein, Published on 10/09/2014

» What would the week be without another Apple rumour? The new iWatch, out next year, will apparently cost US$400 (about 13,000 baht). I recently ordered a smartwatch for about $40, just to see what it could do. I seriously doubt I would ever pay 10 times that amount for a similar item. More when it arrives and I get to play with it.

    7, 8, skip 9, and it's 10!

Life, James Hein, Published on 08/10/2014

» Forget Windows 9, Microsoft is so certain the next version of Windows is so good they are jumping right to 10. Yes, Windows 10. Its reasoning is something about this not being an incremental update, which is what I thought was the point of a decimal numbering system (8.1).

How secure are our secure transactions?

Life, James Hein, Published on 22/10/2014

» So far, this month has been security issue after security issue. Not counting the usual Microsoft updates, Adobe has been having all sorts of vulnerability problems, which explains the rapid fire updates you keep seeing on your computer. The biggest hit nation so far this month, however, has to be South Korea.

    Unconcerned China hacks the iCloud

Life, James Hein, Published on 29/10/2014

» Apple was temporarily enthused that their iPhone 6 was going on sale in China since this has been a reasonable marketplace for them in the past. Then it was reported that China state-supported hackers were actively implementing a so-called man-in-the-middle attack against Apple's iCloud which would give them access to people in China trying to connect to the iCloud.com server. This attack replaces the certificate used by the customer and allows monitoring of user names, passwords and activity.

    Buyer's market for smartphones

Life, James Hein, Published on 12/11/2014

» With the Western markets saturated, the pattern for smartphone sales is starting to change. It is a very good time to be the buyer as competition is fierce for those upgrading and for the tiny minority who don't yet have a model from the upper end of the market. Last month, LG was the only major retailer who had a positive number in their earnings statement. By comparison Samsung, HTC and Sony did not do so well. Elsewhere, like in China and India, the markets are expanding and people are starting to update from a regular phone to the smarter variety, but in the lower price range.
