    Fiery lessons not learnt

    News, Published on 17/06/2017

» When seeing a catastrophic fire of a London high-rise building in a country where safety is supposedly of paramount importance (BP, June 15), one wonders how long it will be before Thailand, where it seems safety is of a lesser importance, experience a high-rise fire of similar magnitude? Where fire appliances cannot not reach the upper floors. No fire alarms or fire doors. No smoke detectors and no sprinklers. I hope such a tragedy never happens.

    Torpedo the sub plan

    News, Postbag, Published on 01/04/2017

» I think I have a permanent pain in the neck from years of shaking my head over the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) and its quest for submarines. As a military man I am familiar with high-ranking officers and their obsession for certain equipment, an obsession often not matching real mission requirements. The RTN is out to purchase Chinese Type 041 submarines. The Type 041 is a diesel electric sub, about 254 feet long, about 3,600 tonnes, and has a normal crew of 38. The armament is six torpedo tubes firing torpedoes, and possibly anti-ship missiles.

    It's just not Buddhism

    News, Postbag, Published on 24/02/2017

» Thai governments in the past have made a grave mistake in allowing the Dhammakaya Buddhist sect to build a temple on a vast piece of land as large as 2,300 rai -- despite the fact that normal Thai Buddhist temples are no larger than five or 10 rai. This has caused consternation among Thai Buddhists that this is not Buddhism according the original vision of the Lord Buddha.
