Connecting the past to the present
Life, Published on 13/03/2017
» The Australian embassy in Thailand sits on Sathon Road behind a tall white fence, a mustard-gold building elevated on stilts, lined with tiles made by a ceramicist in Chiang Mai. A lake twists around and under the embassy and a flat shrub, perfectly fashioned in the shape of Australia, lies out the front of the building. For decades, it has been one of the most recognisable works of architecture on the busy Bangkok road.

Breaking bad news
Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 27/01/2017
» Now that 2016 is finally over, we can rest assured that all the bull**** and f**kery it brought with it will never be repeated. Right? RIGHT?! Bleh, who knows what the future has in store for us. Let's face it, this time last year the thought of Trump becoming the 45th President of the United States probably made you spit out your coffee or, if you're a hipster, choke on your kale juice. But then again, never say never, right?

Oasis in the concrete jungle
B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 30/10/2016
» It rained hard in the wee hours of the morning that day I went to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital two weeks ago. As I walked past the Department of Laboratory Medicine building, a sudden burst of sound filled the air. I stopped to look and listen, and was mesmerised by what I saw.

Backward thinking
News, Postbag, Published on 25/09/2016
» It's "rear-end backwards" time again in Thailand. While the rest of the world enjoyed the Thai tourism video made with khon figures, including the Thai community here in California, only the Thais in Thailand complained. Oh ye of narrow vision and little faith. Wake up and see Thailand for what it really is, and how it is perceived, certainly not a country of only beautiful beaches and temples.

Photojournalist in the eye of the storm no more
News, Nanchanok Wongsamuth, Published on 09/10/2016
» The horrible traffic jams, the disgusting air and the "sh*tty" place at Khao San Road were the reasons that German photojournalist Nick Nostitz hated Bangkok when he first arrived in 1989. Arriving as a backpacker carrying a surfboard, the 21-year-old wrote in his diary that "I will never come back to this awful place".

Tipping the scales
Spectrum, Chaiyot Yongcharoenchai, Published on 09/10/2016
» 'They are disgusting, they scare me, they hurt with their deadly saliva, and they destroy the trees." These are among the seemingly endless complaints made against water monitor lizards by the many people who use Lumpini Park for workouts and recreation. After extensive complaints, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration decided to remove the "uneasy on the eyes" animal from the park last month.

Grandma’s ghost
Tatat Bunnag, Published on 09/08/2016
» Horror films are big business in Thailand. Even though many follow the same basic formula and themes, audiences keep coming back for more. Ama (Grandmother) is the latest comedy-horror from Sahamongkol Films and sees a Thai-Chinese family haunted by the ghost of their grandmother as they fight over her fortune.
