    Back from the brink

    News, Published on 15/07/2012

» Thank goodness common sense has prevailed. From the threats of citizens' arrests of the Constitution Court judges, and the prediction from one MP of civil war, the country has again pulled back from the brink, with some revealing results. For one, the delight in the faces of the UDD and red shirts indicates they have faith in the justice system after all, and hopefully can now stop doubting the courts. For those who thought they might use an imperfect charter rewrite to sneak in a whitewash, this will be a pyrrhic victory.

When all is run and won

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 09/08/2012

» Every party comes to an end. So too does the 2012 London Olympic Games, which arrives at its curtain call on Sunday. At the closing ceremony, all eyes will shift to Rio de Janeiro, the city that will take over the torch. Brazil is another BRIC countries _ a new emerging economy beside China, India and Russia _ that plays host to the Games. (Please stand up India, as I am totally convinced that a New Delhi or Mumbai Summer Olympics will shame London and Beijing.)

Black clouds form over Kittiratt's export 'white lie'

News, Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 27/08/2012

» Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong is suffocating under a deluge of harsh criticism for having admitted that he told a "white lie", as he terms it, about Thailand's export growth target this year in order to boost the confidence of investors. So another bashing from me is unnecessary.

Why even incompetents have job security

News, Arglit Boonyai, Published on 01/09/2012

» Thailand is certainly not the best place in the world to make a living. The country's average monthly wage of 15,340 baht sits well below the global average of 46,440 baht. Even when we factor in the relatively cheap cost of living and other benefits of living in Thailand, 15,340 baht is still peanuts.

    Religious identity and the South

    News, Published on 17/09/2012

» After the end of the cold war and while the capitalism-vs-socialism conflict was subsiding, many more issues emerged that were dubbed as either religious or ethnic conflicts. But I would argue that the nature of those conflicts is still primarily political, while ethnicity and religions are contributing factors. According to one estimate, there have been about 100 violent political conflicts (with 100 deaths or more per year) since 1990. More than half persist till today, while new ones emerge. The conflict in the southernmost region of Thailand is one of them.
