Put 'Happy' in the New Year
News, Published on 02/01/2012
» It was an easy act to let go of the year 2011 and welcome in the New Year, 2012/2555. That is not to say that the past year was without achievement for our citizens. But we could easily have done without the calamities of the past year. The huge crowds drawn to Sanam Luang on Saturday night for a prayerful pre-midnight evening gave voice to the thought all around the country: Let us hope and work for a better year ahead than the one we are leaving behind.

Clarity, PM, for women's fund
News, Published on 27/01/2012
» It is no secret that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is no darling of women's rights groups. To them, she is only the proxy of her brother Thaksin, whom they believe still wields the real power behind this Pheu Thai-led administration.

» The government is right in not pushing for a change to Section 112 of the Criminal Code, which regards lese majeste as an offence against the security of the state. But it may amend the current Constitution, which was drawn up in 2007 at the behest of the military officers who removed then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from power on Sept 19, 2006.

To boost her popularity, here's Yingluck II

» The cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, which comes after only five months in office, is aimed at redeeming her credibility, which has been dented by the government's poor handling of the flood late last year.

Heavyweights battle over lese majeste law
News, Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 16/01/2012
» The battle of wits over whether the lese majeste law or Section 112 of the Criminal Code should be amended or left untouched has intensified in academic circles now that all political parties, including the Democrats and Pheu Thai, have reached a consensus that they will leave the law as it is.

Buffet cabinet and New Thailand
Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 24/01/2012
» About 100 Pheu Thai MPs are lining up, waiting for their turn at a cabinet seat, redolent of a large group of diners eagerly lining up at a buffet table which can seat only 35 people at a time.

Jobless US rails at globalisation
News, Published on 25/01/2012
» It is an election year in the United States of America and the world's biggest economic engine is barely puttering, indeed often sputtering. The next link in this series of events is as predictable as the rainy season in these parts. President Barack Obama and the opposition Republican Party candidates already are in full cry: "Blame the foreigners." A variety of slogans already appearing on the US election campaign trail clearly present the message we will be hearing from now through November, and probably beyond.
