» The recent announcement by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) that it has ordered state agencies to put on hold projects related to the Pheu Thai government’s 350-billion-baht flood control and water resources management scheme is significant, as it brings with it a glint of hope for a more rational and coherent approach to the sector in future.

» A week, it is said, is a long time in politics. But events in Asia during the past week may define the region for decades to come.

Stopping the cycle of blame through collaboration

    News, Published on 27/05/2014

» I’m an incredibly opinionated person. Whether politics, religion, psychology, education or virtually any other topic, you can be almost certain that I’ll have a view that I’m willing to defend. Debate and dialogue play a critical role in my personal and professional life, from my time as a debate coach to my interactions with friends and colleagues. Yet as I’ve got older, I’ve become much more aware that however much knowledge I may gain, I could always be wrong — as could we all. Watching the debate rage over the coup in my adopted home of Thailand, never have I been more reminded of our collective fallibility.

» As Thailand’s latest coup bears striking similarities and differences to its dozen precursors, it behooves the National Council for Peace and Order to learn from the past. America must not work against NCPO

    Published on 30/06/2014

» There was a time when Thai-American relations were almost a love affair. The Americans got the kingdom off the hook with the British and French, who wanted retribution for Thai participation alongside the Japanese in World War II.

    Regime apologists

    Oped, Published on 28/06/2014

» I have been disappointed and incredulous over the contents of PostBag for the past few weeks. It seems to contain little but apologias for military dictatorship, anti-Western venom, and childlike belief in the miraculous powers of the junta.

Battling lese majeste law from a jail cell

    News, Published on 29/04/2014

» I am sitting here in my prison cell late at night. The lights are on, the other prisoners are asleep and I sit alone hunched up against the wall. I am thinking of the times before my incarceration when I would be composing articles for the magazine, Voice of Taksin, at this time of night. I was the editor and publisher of this bi-weekly magazine. The work was exhausting but very rewarding as 30,000 copies would be printed and sold. Its publication was much anticipated by its readers and would be the focus for political discussion and comment. Some of the articles were incendiary because they were considered to be defamatory to the Thai monarchy by the Thai media and conservative political elite.
