The future, in reverse
Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 08/06/2016
» On the surface, artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul's video of a night journey through a temple doesn't seem to be in dialogue with photographs of Sakhalin island by Japanese Tomoko Yoneda. Nor does there seem to be any connection between Field Recordings' video work documenting migrant workers on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River and MAP Office's incredibly detailed imaginary map of "future Hong Kong".

Pleasure at the fairground
Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 24/11/2015
» Forget hazardous flying lanterns of the North. This Loy Krathong Festival, make your way to the old-school ngan wat, or temple fair, and while many temples around the country have put up fairgrounds to celebrate the Full Moon night of the 12th lunar month, none can beat Bangkok's oldest and most legendary ngan wat Phu Khao Thong.

Retelling a great Lao-Thai tale
Life, Chris Baker, Published on 22/02/2016
» Sinxay is a story which appears in slightly different versions with slightly different names in Mon, Thai, Lao and Khmer. The plot is a classic quest in which a hero prince is banished by the machinations of evil siblings, travels long through forest and mountain, defeats many fearsome enemies, and is eventually celebrated in a great homecoming. Old versions were written in verse for recitation at festivals. Key scenes were popular with artists painting temple murals. During the nationalist era in the 1940s, the great littérateur of Laos, Maha Sila Viravong, began a prose version in a conscious attempt to create a Lao national literature. More recently, Sinxay has been celebrated as a kind of national hero in Laos. In 2005, Khon Kaen municipality adopted Sinxay as symbol of the city, and characters from the tale sprouted on the peaks of the city's lamp posts.

Muse, Ariane Kupferman-Sutthavong, Published on 18/08/2018
» 1. The Bangkok Biennial has brought to town its fair share of exhibitions, as pavilions are dispersed throughout the city. Opening this weekend, the Supernatural Pavilion is taking place in Care Nang Leung temple with a performance and video installation The 5x5 Legged Stool, based on the 1962 dance score by Ann Halpin, The Five Legged Stool. In Bangkok, a new performance by Mari Fukutome comes to life, captured by video artist Chulayarnnon Siriphol, and explores the ways in which contemporary dance is recorded and archived in time. Viewers can visit the pavilion until tomorrow. Performances will take place at 8pm at Wat Care Nang Lerng, Phaniang Road, Khwaeng Wat Sommanat and Khet Pom Prap Sattru Phai.

Struggling to survive
Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 23/05/2023
» You are what you eat, but some do not have the privilege to choose. Nai, who is skinny and short for his age, lacks more than just a proper diet. He has been abandoned by his mother, and his father is serving a jail term. As a result, his uncle has kindly taken him into his own family. But like others, he is living from hand-to-mouth, so providing his nephew with a balanced diet from the five food groups is difficult. Due to a lack of variety in their diet, slum children, though not starving, are suffering from malnutrition.
