    New looks

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 08/10/2016

» Last month, Fashion Field Trip returned for the sixth year to showcase their autumn/winter collections. Held at Sathon's event hot spot Bangkok CityCity Gallery, this year's shows are not the mega-spectacle they usually are, with at most 150 spectators at each show. Still, shows should always be about the clothes, and it's relevant that Vickteerut, Issue and Asava all thought it was appropriate to scale down and return to their roots. In this digital age, it's easy to drift away from the fact that the purpose of shows has always been for press, buyers and VVVIPs of the brand -- not, you know, everyone who owns a smartphone. There wasn't much legroom, with the gallery's small space and even more limited seats, this year, so here's our recap on the industry's big three this season.

Let it all go with Pokémon

Life, James Hein, Published on 20/07/2016

» The Pokémon Go game is taking the smartphone world by storm. Like Ingress before it, it is a real world location based game so you physically have to get out of the house to play it. Unlike Ingress, it has a cartoon character so kids love it but mums and dads don't so much because they have to drive their kids around to out of the way places to get the next Pokémon. This is another game by Niantic, a group within Google and the ones who built Ingress. The game was also quite insecure on iOS phones but that was apparently fixed with a patch. There have been no issues reported by Android phone users.

Internet control freaks are becoming a costly drag

News, Justin Fox, Published on 13/07/2016

» Inke is a Chinese startup that enables users to stream live video. It's doing pretty well -- in April, mobile analytics firm App Annie said it was the seventh highest-grossing smartphone app on the planet. The company does face some costs that internet companies elsewhere in the world don't, though. This is from a Bloomberg article last week on China's live-streaming boom, and the government's concerns that it could get out of hand:

What do great leaders have in common? They listen

Business, Sorayuth Vathanavisuth, Published on 16/06/2016

» Have you ever noticed that you prefer to discuss things with some colleagues and not with others? One reason could be the way a person behaves during a conversation. He or she will demonstrate a willingness to listen to what you have to say rather than shifting their eyes to glance at a smartphone or some other distraction.

Communicating honestly and effectively still matters

Business, Sorayuth Vathanavisuth, Published on 02/06/2016

» In today's world we have more ways to communicate than ever before. We chat via social media, smartphone applications and Skype, and many in the working world use video conferencing. Yet there is often no substitute for a face-to-face conversation.

All the glitz, glamour from Hollywood -- all for free

» The boom in free publications is rekindling the practice of reading on paper, rather than on computer or smartphone screens.

Life, Pattarawadee Saengmanee, Published on 25/05/2023

» A new alternative to change the mood without leaving town, I checked into Centra by Centara Hotel Bangkok Phra Nakhon in the afternoon and spent the rest of the day at its cafe observing local life through the floor-to-ceiling windows while sipping iced tea paired with freshly baked pastries.

    Hot Lava

Life, Komsan John Jandamit, Published on 04/02/2015

» AIS's new deal is hard to ignore. The service provider is retailing a 5-inch quad-core Android phone for 4,790 baht, with 4,000 baht free talk time. A pretty bold bargain, because it is like getting a phone for 790 baht. But is the phone any good?

Spooks and kooks on a Japanese island

    Sunday Spotlight, Published on 07/05/2023

» Most Japanese schoolchildren know the kappa as a trickster who looks like a cross between a frog and a turtle with an indented head. If you're not careful, it could drag you into the river to drown. The tengu, identifiable by its bright red face and long nose, lurks in the woods. Beware of the tanuki, a supernatural variation of a raccoon dog, for it may make a fool of you when it crosses your path.

    Mind over manners

B Magazine, Michael Ruffles, Published on 23/11/2014

» From time to time, the Land of Smiles seems like it's anything but. It becomes the land of smirks when you're waiting for change and the motorcycle taxi rider insists he doesn't have enough. It becomes the land of scowls when you suggest to a middle-aged woman with the khunying hairdo that she wait her turn at the 7-Eleven counter. It becomes the land of blank stares when you point out to the smartphone zombies that they shouldn't block the door of the skytrain.
