» Japanese anime, a genre loved by many, has taken the world by storm, especially over the past few years. And with Star Wars being a pop-culture phenomenon and one of the biggest sci-fi franchises on the planet, some may have wondered how an non-American-made computer-animated Star Wars movie besides The Clone Wars (2008) and The Bad Batch (2021) would look. Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 17/09/2021

» Whether you believe in life after death or not, we can all agree that it would be nice to have more time to settle matters or have the chance to say goodbye to loved ones before we continue our journey into the afterlife. » Joe Wright's latest directorial thriller The Woman In The Window has recently been the centre of criticism by fans of the book that the film is based on and others who think the premise borrowed too much from Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic film Rear Window. But regardless if one calls it a rip off or an homage to Hitchcock, the opening scene of the movie utilises the camera to pan across the interior of a lonely apartment and settle on a TV freeze-frame of James Stewart's anguished face from Rear Window, so at least they're acknowledging the similarities. And yes, this film is also all about peeping.

An underwater friendship

» My Octopus Teacher recently won the Best Documentary category at the Academy Awards, which may be a huge surprise for many. This story of a man and his unlikely friendship with an octopus in the cold ocean off Cape Town, South Africa triumphed over other heavy hitters this year like Alexander Nanau's Collective, a shocking exposé of needless deaths in Romania; Time, a film about a wife fighting for the release of her husband who was jailed for 60 years; or Crip Camp, an Obama-produced story about the battle for disability rights in the US. But for whatever reason, My Octopus Teacher was seen by critics as the type of underdog story the Oscars love. However, was the film really that great? Well, not really.
