Off the beaten track

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 21/06/2012

» Connected to the southeast of Chiang Mai, Lamphun is geographically larger than many other provinces. Yet to many it seems like a tiny spot in the Kingdom, and is virtually invisible on the tourist trail. It's a pity travellers do not know what they are missing.

Rollers a good substitute in rainy season

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 21/06/2012

» The monsoon season is back and will soon be in full swing. This is definitely not the favourite time of year for cyclists in this tropical country. Rains usually mean no riding.

Sifting through the past

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 24/05/2012

» Saraburi may not boast Thailand's most important historical sites. But if you have been to all those former capitals such as Ayutthaya, Sukhothai or Chiang Mai, this province about an hour and a half drive northeast of Bangkok is one of the places you have to visit to get a better idea of history's finer details.

Lord Shiva awaits

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/05/2012

» Once upon a time in a town called Mahabalipuram, a group of royally-commissioned sculptors were working on a big boulder at the foot of a hill. As they were meticulously chiselling out one tiny bit after another from the rock surface, Lord Shiva, with a cobra around his chest and a trident in one of his hands, gradually appeared.

» Downhill mountain biking may not sound like a healthy thing to do for a middle-aged man. But a lot of downhillers I've met are 40 and over. We're no Peter Pans, that fairy tale boy who is forever young, I know. But we just have no choice. Even if the sport had existed when we were in our teen years, we wouldn't have been able to afford it.

Creature (dis)comforts of going solo

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 15/03/2012

» Before I took up mountain biking about a decade ago, trekking was my passion. I'd been to quite a number of natural sites across the Kingdom and knew that some would be fun destinations to return to one day with my bike. Kadangla waterfall in Phetchaburi province was one such place.

The hidden gateway

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 12/04/2012

» Hidden in a secluded narrow passage between the limestone cliff faces, sheltered beneath a towering natural arch as tall as the mountains that conceal it from the outside world, the "ancient" Chinese way station down below not only looks as if it has always been there for centuries but also adds entrancing magic to this mystifying sanctum.

New track sends Hua Hin downhill

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/04/2012

» I went to Hua Hin again last Saturday. And like my two previous trips there, the beach and those hip restaurants and fashion outlets that the seaside resort town is famous for were not included in the itinerary.

Resurgent Serbia

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/01/2012

» As peace has returned to most of the Balkans, countries in the region, including those that broke off from the former Yugoslavia, are opening their doors to tourists. And Serbia, despite the unsettled conflict with Kosovo to its south, is no exception.

New fun on wheels

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/01/2012

» When I was little, my mother bought me a tricycle. It didn't look as cool as the bikes older boys were riding but I couldn't blame her because what she did seemed like a logical first step. After all, three wheels were evidently easier to handle and thus safer than two wheels.
