    Oblivious army

    News, Postbag, Published on 27/09/2019

» According to the latest UN report on rising sea levels, Bangkok is one of the cities that will be experiencing yearly floods 30 years from now. If the military was really serious about protecting the country, they would be using their budget to move their more vulnerable installations to higher ground and buying equipment to combat floods instead of the attack helicopters, missiles and rockets that army commander Gen Apirat Kongsompong wants.

    Sour side of sugar

    News, Postbag, Published on 15/11/2019

» It is interesting to see how the sugar industry has come out against the ban on the three harmful pesticides. The industry claims the ban will drive up the price of sugar. Somehow, the health of consumers and those who work in the industry does not factor into the equation. Everything is always evaluated in profit margins. The price hike would be enough to drive consumers away from sugar in general. I say, good riddance. Reducing sugar consumption would be a healthier decision for all. In fact, a cut to all sweeteners -- natural or artificial -- should be paramount to one's health and well-being.

» I love kimchi and I love ramen. I love the bushido way of life and Japanese humility, and I love South Koreans' resilience and devotion to education that helped them lift their country from poverty after World War II to become an Asian economic powerhouse. And in my opinion, both South Koreans and Japanese are among the nicest people in the world.

The Panglong peace process is precariously poised

News, Larry Jagan, Published on 28/10/2019

» Myanmar's stalled peace process is precariously poised, and may now be in danger of falling apart all together, as mistrust and hostility between some of the ethnic groups and the military worsened significantly. The fragile relationships between the three key players deteriorated further on the eve of the anniversary of the signing of a key peace pact, and the hopes of kick-starting negotiations and bringing the groups back to the table took a tumble for the worst.

    Feast of metaphors

    News, Postbag, Published on 08/11/2019

» Re: "Rowing in the same boat", (BP, Nov 6). I was charmed by the rich feast of metaphors produced by Chinese premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as they signed the three memoranda of understanding. It was enough to send this dried-up old connoisseur of great rhetoric into raptures of pre-orgasmic ecstasy.
