No excuse for Mideast abuse

» The United Nations took a regrettable step on women's rights last week. The Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) picked the Tehran government to sit on its women's rights committee. While there are several countries that truly should not be on this committee, Iran is near or at the top. In the same week that the UNHRC felt Iran should represent women's and children's rights, the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran said that the country was in the midst of a crackdown that, in particular, sentences children to death.

Horror of the disappeared

» Cases of the sudden disappearance of political dissidents continue to mount. The latest such case occurred in daytime, inside a well-known Bangkok mall. Truong Duy Nhat, a well-known journalist and blogger in Vietnam, was seized and dragged out of Future Park shopping centre. He had just registered his personal details and applied for asylum through the UN refugee office. His disappearance on Jan 26 has received the usual silence from governments involved.

Torture law must pass

» This week the junta-appointed National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will begin winding up business for the year. On the schedule for Thursday is the reading of a bill that is long overdue. If passed -- and it must -- it will officially bar government and security forces from using torture and enforced disappearance. It is shocking, this far into the 21st century, that a civilised nation has never prohibited these odious practices.

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has taken the right steps over the latest resurrection of the Kra Canal. But that doesn't mean he's going to get much support or win over public opinion on the matter. By ordering two new studies into updated proposals for building the canal, he will get criticism from both sides. Proponents of what they want to call the "Thai Canal" think he is taking too long and opponents of the proposal believe he should do nothing.

Failed alert for tsunami

» The earthquake and tsunami that devastated the capital and surrounding villages of Central Sulawesi should have served as a warning to the region and, indeed, much of the world. It is unfortunate that the reaction to the tragedy has been largely just a shrug. Indonesian and foreign experts have proved that a faulty warning system and unprepared citizens caused many, probably a large majority of the estimated 5,000 deaths. None of it had a noticeable effect in Thailand -- and it should have.

Teachers must learn

» The increasing call to help heavily indebted teachers is a reflection of deep failure at so many levels. As the government rightly points out, teachers collectively have acted irresponsibly in accumulating debts totalling 418 billion baht from the special Government Savings Bank (GSB) fund. The teachers claim the government and its bank have encouraged borrowing. And critics are correct to note that the vast majority of the borrowings were mainly for personal enjoyment and buying consumer items.

Government exploits Wild Boars

» The government's actions towards the rescued Chiang Rai football team makes it appear confused and cold, not to mention exploitative. This may seem ironic to some, since the government's stated aim was to protect the 12 Wild Boars and their families, along with coach Ekapol Chanthawong. In fact, almost everything ministers and senior officials have done in the days since the rescue succeeded on July 10 has been poorly planned and executed.

» The annual US State Department report on efforts to combat human trafficking was released last week, with deserved praise for Thailand. For the second time in three years, the benchmark Trafficking in Persons Report raised the country's ranking against all nations of the world. The promotion to "Tier 2" caused celebration in the military regime. It also warned of serious challenges in the new campaign to raise Thailand from second place to the top.
