» I had the good fortune of visiting England's oldest golf club recently and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Royal Blackheath was established back in 1608 and as you would imagine the club is steeped in tradition. The lovely clubhouse possesses a museum on its upper level that holds wonderful memories of days gone by. The following is a little of the writing of the great golf writer and BBC golf commentator Henry Longhurst: "Royal Blackheath captures the spirit of the old simplicity of golf. Those were the days when you played the ball as it lay and there were 19 rules; when any member who turned up by "club time" was assured of a game and all dined afterwards at the Green Man; and when you were fined a gallon of claret for getting married or becoming a father.
