Army chief a fearmonger
News, Editorial, Published on 03/01/2020
» As the army chief, Gen Apirat Kongsompong should stay out of politics. But he has always found it hard to resist the temptation of spreading or stirring biased and provocative political messages. His latest remark, which suggests possible arms robbery and associated street violence, is as weak and bewildering as ever because it is not accompanied with even a shred of evidence. It also lacks a sense of certainty. What is certain is that it is a disservice to the nation.

Running toward a crisis
News, Editorial, Published on 14/01/2020
» With two major political gatherings, one seeking to oust Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha from power and the other throwing its support behind him, going on over the weekend, it cannot be denied that the country is on the brink of plunging into a new round of crisis.

Instability threatens economic growth
News, Wichit Chantanusornsiri, Published on 27/04/2019
» Without decisive winners from the March 24 poll, there are fears that political instability will affect the country's economy. Such concerns are understandable given that three parties, namely the pro-military Palang Pracharath Party, and Pheu Thai Party and Future Forward Party (which brand themselves as the anti-regime camp), are engaging in a post-election tug of war.

Land of intrigues
News, Postbag, Published on 24/09/2019
» Under PM Prayut Chan-o-cha's leadership since 2014, there have been mysterious incidents that have led political junkies to rack their brains trying to solve them.

Time to lift rights bans
News, Editorial, Published on 17/09/2018
» The best thing that can be said about last week's action by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) is that the all-male group understands it has created a problem. It has returned to the public a tiny bit of the civil and human rights it removed 52 months ago. On Friday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha used his extraordinary powers under Section 44 to give some small but important freedoms to political parties. While the order restores the right to organise party affairs, it falls lamentably short of restoring basic and constitutional rights to all Thais.

Politics is sport for Newin
News, Published on 08/09/2018
» Newin Chidchob, a veteran politician who has turned his focus to football and motorsport in the northeastern province of Buri Ram, has made headlines again as the regime is expected to ease its ban on political activities some time this month.

Is Aussie political madness catching?
News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 29/08/2018
» I happened to be in Canberra last Friday, speaking to a room full of journalists at the National Press Club, when the news came in, halfway through lunch, that Australia had a new prime minister. The moderator pointed out that the year is already two-thirds gone and it is "only three prime ministers till Christmas" -- and the China Daily's headline read "Australia changes its prime minister again, again, again, again, again".

Political ties
B Magazine, Andrew Biggs, Published on 02/06/2019
» I remember my first few months in Thailand. Having fallen in love with the culture, I was determined to steep myself in it as much as I could. I learned to enjoy a hot panang curry over rice for breakfast -- what a jolt to the system after a lifetime of cornflakes and toast and, upon entering adulthood, black coffee and a cigarette.

Into the political fray
News, Alan Dawson, Published on 30/09/2018
» Last June 30, the sometimes-accurate online Wikipedia updated the opening line of its entry on the general prime minister. For the first time, the introduction read, "Prayut Chan-o-cha is a Thai politician..." Before that, according to Wikipedia, Gen (Ret) Prayut was just a retired army general and head of the military junta -- which is what he claimed to be.

Australia's turn in the muck of political tribalism
News, Daniel Moss, Published on 22/02/2018
» Australians who thought the disruptions that have led many to view North Atlantic politics with disdain wouldn't reach their corner of the world can no longer ignore reality. The urban-rural divide that drove Brexit and the election of Donald Trump is now reverberating closer to home, and it's not a good look.
