    Udon’s got talent

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 08/05/2014

» One of the most prosperous cities in the Northeast, Udon Thani is known as a commercial and entertainment hub in the upper Isan region. And that’s the picture of Udon (as it is called for short) that I had always had until my latest visit on a press trip organised by Nok Air to witness a bike race held last Saturday as part of the celebration of the city’s 121st anniversary.

    Welcome to the fold

» Since the anti-Yingluck (Thaksin) regime protesters began their "Bangkok Shutdown" operation on Monday, traffic in most of the capital has been free-flowing. For the past four days the first thing I do every morning is turn on the Google Maps app on my smartphone to check what it's like on the streets. Every day and at any time of day, the roads and expressways that usually appear in yellow or red on the map depending on the degree of congestion are now delightfully green. Traffic-wise it's as if Bangkok is still in the long holidays mood.

» It may be none of my business, but something has been disturbing me in recent years. » When it comes to mountain biking, getting there is not just half the fun; it's every bit a part of the excitement! And that proved true again last Sunday when I revisited Pha Sawan waterfalls in Thong Pha Phum, Kanchanaburi.

» Mention Nakhon Si Thammarat and the image of the province's most revered Phra Borommathat pagoda would pop up in the mind of many Thais. That, perhaps, is followed by the famous sat duen sip ceremony, the grand event in which locals gather to make merit for their deceased relatives; nang talung shadow puppets; manorah folk performance and many more.

Rain no damper for bikers in Rayong

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 20/09/2012

» The city of Rayong on the eastern seaboard is often associated with industries and their environmental side effects. However, not everybody knows that Rayong boasts almost as many mountain bike trails as industrial estates. And the one I'm going to tell you about will definitely make you envy the bikers who live there!

    Hues of Hokkaido

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 02/08/2012

» Two years ago I visited Hokkaido for the first time. The northern island of Japan was virtually all white, covered with snow which attracted hordes of winter sports lovers from over the world. I was there again last week. This time it's summer, the season when Hokkaido's amazing array of colours is most vividly exposed.
