Motorbike thieves rob Swiss woman

» A woman carrying 7,000 baht, a mobile phone, a credit card and a passport was attacked as she was driving along Soi Buakhao on her motorbike. Milica Ceh, age 48, apparently was followed by two men on a motorbike who bumped into her bike causing it to crash. In the confusion, the 48-year-old woman lost her shoulder bag containing the valuables. She was taken to hospital. Police assigned a special detective to look into the case. The assaulted woman was unable to give a detailed description of her attackers but said they were men wearing black T-shirts.

» Amorn Chaivongfhun, a 26-year-old Thai women, reported at the Pattaya police station that she had been cheated of a valuable iPhone. She claimed to have met a man in a shop on Walking Street who said he could provide an excellent time in bed. After accepting his offer and going to his room, Amorn stepped into the shower and the man stepped out of the room with her 20,000-baht mobile phone. Police later caught 46-year-old Chalermporn Saeung who admitted to the theft and offered to return the iPhone to avoid going to jail. He was released after giving back the telephone and paying a 2,000 baht fine.

Chips down in a poker game

» Police raided a house on Pratumnak Road where several men and women were playing poker for high-stakes. Police seized the poker table, playing cards, poker chips and, of course, piles of cash–reportedly about 300,000 baht. Officers also discovered an account book revealing that the illegal gambling had been going on for several months. American Matthew Mortensen was said to be one of the organizers, whilst two Cambodians in the den were assistants earning around 2,000 baht a time. Seven people were taken into custody; others managed to escape through side exits and windows.

Swiss pensioner accused of indecency

» Robert Nonstantine, 69-year-old former owner of a gay bar in Pattaya, was arrested for alleged offences involving young boys at his Banglamung home. Officers said they found incriminating photos and computer clips of the Swiss man harassing pre-pubescent boys. Nonstantine allegedly used Thai accomplices to lure 10- to 13-year-old boys to his home, and arranged for his gay friends to meet with the youths. The youngsters were paid up to 300 baht and told not to tell anyone about the incidents. The suspect said that the boys simply came to his house to swim and he denied any wrongdoing.

Foreigners strain Thai hospitals

» Yet another report, this time from 7News Corporation in Australia, is complaining that public hospitals in Thailand face increasing financial burdens as more and more Australians, mostly male and under 30, are travelling without proper insurance. One public hospital in Phuket says last year there was an accumulation of 4 million baht in unpaid debts. Public hospitals tend to become dumping grounds for sick foreigners who cannot afford to pay the high tariffs in top-notch private institutions. A similar story was reported by public hospitals in Chonburi Province last year. The government reportedly is looking at imposing compulsory insurance packages for all expats and tourists to Thailand, although the complexity of the detail is said to be stalling implementation. One obvious problem is that elderly tourists and expats may be excluded from becoming insured because of pre-existing conditions or prohibitively-expensive premiums.

Warning about Thai tourism

» The Thai Chamber of Commerce has warned that Thailand is in danger of losing out to Malaysia and Singapore in the battle to attract tourists. Aat Pisanwanich, a director, said that other ASEAN countries had improved their tourist and hospitality profiles while Thailand appeared to be standing still. “Foreign visitors are less satisfied than they once were with the Siamese Smile,” he said whilst adding that some front-line staff tended to look displeased. He suggested that the service industry in Thailand should concentrate on improving staff attitudes or risk losing many visitors in the future. Other suggestions were to improve the language skills of staff, not only in English but in Japanese and Chinese as well. If these improvements were made, the Chamber concluded, Thailand could well draw up to 34 million tourists a year by the end of this decade with their revenue of 1.65 trillion baht contributing over 11 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. Currently Malaysia attracts slightly more than the 22 million visitors to Thailand at 25 million with Singapore next at 14 million.

New attack on nominee loopholes

» The office of the Ombudsman is seeking new legislation to prevent foreigners illegally owning land via Thai nominees. Under the proposed legislation, foreigners would face long terms of imprisonment or fines up to two million baht for trying to hide their purchase of land. Those found holding Thai papers illegally might be allowed up to a year to transfer the plots to legitimate entities. The current loopholes are said to be mainly setting up registered companies with a 51:49 Thai-foreign ownership or by marrying a Thai. There is a suspicion that many plots of land are illegally owned by Thais in mainland Thailand and on the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. At the moment land ownership deals are not public information, leading to suspicious transactions by Thais and foreigners alike. Critics say that there is no reason for new laws. What’s needed is strict enforcement of existing legislation including the anti-money laundering rules and the notoriously lax tax laws on property transactions.

Drunken Russian breaks baht bus windscreen

» Unable to name his destination, a Russian tourist flared up and broke the windshield of a baht bus. The driver, Surachai, said the Russian flagged down the songthaew on Second Road, and climbed in back. After riding for about a kilometer, Surachai stopped and asked where the passenger was going. The tourist appeared drunk and became angry enough to slam his elbow into the windscreen. When police arrived at the scene they were unable to communicate with the Russian. The Russian was taken to the police station, then left and went to sleep outside the Montien Hotel. He will be rearrested when the booze wears off and a translator is available.
