Foreigners strain Thai hospitals

» Yet another report, this time from 7News Corporation in Australia, is complaining that public hospitals in Thailand face increasing financial burdens as more and more Australians, mostly male and under 30, are travelling without proper insurance. One public hospital in Phuket says last year there was an accumulation of 4 million baht in unpaid debts. Public hospitals tend to become dumping grounds for sick foreigners who cannot afford to pay the high tariffs in top-notch private institutions. A similar story was reported by public hospitals in Chonburi Province last year. The government reportedly is looking at imposing compulsory insurance packages for all expats and tourists to Thailand, although the complexity of the detail is said to be stalling implementation. One obvious problem is that elderly tourists and expats may be excluded from becoming insured because of pre-existing conditions or prohibitively-expensive premiums.

Swiss pensioner accused of indecency

» Robert Nonstantine, 69-year-old former owner of a gay bar in Pattaya, was arrested for alleged offences involving young boys at his Banglamung home. Officers said they found incriminating photos and computer clips of the Swiss man harassing pre-pubescent boys. Nonstantine allegedly used Thai accomplices to lure 10- to 13-year-old boys to his home, and arranged for his gay friends to meet with the youths. The youngsters were paid up to 300 baht and told not to tell anyone about the incidents. The suspect said that the boys simply came to his house to swim and he denied any wrongdoing.

Chips down in a poker game

» Police raided a house on Pratumnak Road where several men and women were playing poker for high-stakes. Police seized the poker table, playing cards, poker chips and, of course, piles of cash–reportedly about 300,000 baht. Officers also discovered an account book revealing that the illegal gambling had been going on for several months. American Matthew Mortensen was said to be one of the organizers, whilst two Cambodians in the den were assistants earning around 2,000 baht a time. Seven people were taken into custody; others managed to escape through side exits and windows.

» Amorn Chaivongfhun, a 26-year-old Thai women, reported at the Pattaya police station that she had been cheated of a valuable iPhone. She claimed to have met a man in a shop on Walking Street who said he could provide an excellent time in bed. After accepting his offer and going to his room, Amorn stepped into the shower and the man stepped out of the room with her 20,000-baht mobile phone. Police later caught 46-year-old Chalermporn Saeung who admitted to the theft and offered to return the iPhone to avoid going to jail. He was released after giving back the telephone and paying a 2,000 baht fine.

Motorbike thieves rob Swiss woman

» A woman carrying 7,000 baht, a mobile phone, a credit card and a passport was attacked as she was driving along Soi Buakhao on her motorbike. Milica Ceh, age 48, apparently was followed by two men on a motorbike who bumped into her bike causing it to crash. In the confusion, the 48-year-old woman lost her shoulder bag containing the valuables. She was taken to hospital. Police assigned a special detective to look into the case. The assaulted woman was unable to give a detailed description of her attackers but said they were men wearing black T-shirts.

Gambling debtor is knived

» A man stabbed twice in his torso and right arm was found by police groaning on the ground on Soi Wat Tai Hee. Covered in blood, 34-year-old Prawit Klao Kleamng was rushed to Memorial Hospital. Shortly afterwards, Weerapong Chomtawon calmly walked into the medical facility and announced that he was the knife wielder and was very annoyed that Prawit had not repaid a gambling debt of 1,200 baht. Weerapong said that during an argument in a bar, there had been a fight with broken bottles, after which he stabbed the debtor. Weerapong said he was giving himself up before influential friends of the injured man took their own revenge.

Prison receives musical gifts

» <p>Pop star Lek Carabao and 100 Immortal Bikers have donated several musical instruments to improve the social life at Nong Plalai Remand Prison near Pattaya. The instruments, worth 400,000 baht, were bought after concerts were held by the bikers to fund-raise. Lek said that he had heard that many prisoners were proficient in music but lacked any instruments for practice and performances.</p>

Human excrement thrown by rival

» A Thai garment seller reported to police with a video clip that every morning a neighbour passed his house and threw human faeces at the windows or doors. Tawewat Somboonawin, 37, said he was a vendor at the main South Pattaya market, opposite Chaimongkol temple, and was astonished to confirm it was another clothes seller who was the party guilty of this very annoying and smelly habit. Police interviewed Somboon Nhongai who confessed that she had been having arguments for years with Tawewat and decided to take matters into her own hands by becoming a flying dung expert. She was fined 1,000 baht and told to clear up the disgusting mess outside her neighbour’s house. She also promised to keep the excrement to herself in future.

Ministry chugs ahead with trains

» Whilst the 2-trillion baht borrowing bill is still proceeding through parliament, officials in the Transport Ministry are ploughing ahead with feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments on the electric train project involving four routes. The proposed route from Bangkok to Rayong, starting at Bang Sue and stopping at Chachoengsao, Chonburi and Pattaya, is estimated to cost 101 billion baht. A consultant has been hired to conduct the planning studies. Critics of the scheme say that high-speed trains never break even in any country which has them and require heavy subsidies. The proposed Bangkok-to-Rayong route is one of the less controversial as there is a widespread feeling that the Eastern Seaboard city needs a direct and speedy link to the metropolis. Also the expanding U-tapao provincial airport would benefit enormously from a direct high-speed connection to both Pattaya and Bangkok.

Drinking session leads to deportation

» A labourers’ camp at Pattaya’s Soi 5 was the scene of a boozing session which went wrong when police turned up and discovered 19 Cambodians who were working illegally in the Kingdom. The illegals said that they had had to pay 3,000 baht to be brought to Thailand and were disappointed only to receive 100-200 baht a day for heavy manual work in a 70-hour week. One of the Cambodians, Nok, was hit with a metal pipe during an alcohol-related argument with other Cambodians; his assailants escaped in the confusion as police arrived. All those caught will be returned to the Cambodian border, but they may turn up here again soon.
