Equally predictable are the complaints that we hear in some quarters whenever authorities announce tougher enforcement measures to prevent fatal accidents before the annual festival when the country's roads are jammed.

» Another Songkran festival is behind us, leaving memories both happy and sad, along with some lessons we should heed. What should have been an opportunity to spend a memorable and mindful time with families turned out for some to be a hectic week of wrongdoing, road accidents and other misbehaviour that we don't associate with peaceful people in the Land of Smiles.

» The Songkran festival has been over for a week but memories of those three hectic days are fresh in my mind. The traditional Thai new year is supposed to be a mindful time for paying homage at a temple, asking for blessings from our elders, sprinkling water on others to wash away sins — activities that will help define the right course of individual life for another year.
