Crab pulling in Cha-am
Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 27/01/2012
» Cha-am in Phetchaburi province is a beach town whose many local fishermen are keen at catching blue crabs. Among the most famous groups are the fishermen of Ban Klong Thian and Saphan Hin, who catch blue crabs from the Saphan Hin canal and keep their crab-filled nets submerged in water to ensure freshness. So when buyers come to purchase the crabs, the fishermen simply pull the nets up from the canal and take out the catch. Indeed, this so-called "crab pulling" practice makes Cha-am's crabmeat highly renowned for its freshness and good taste.

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 09/02/2012
» At weekends, Wat Phananchoeng Worawihan in Ayutthaya province is still crowded with Thai and foreign worshippers and tourists all day after last year's big flood. Hundreds of people were spotted paying respect to the presiding Buddha statue, Phra Buddhatrairattananayok, during the half an hour we spent there on a recent trip. Keeping a Tradition
Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 27/02/2012
» One sunny day a boy and a long-horned water buffalo were cooling off in a muddy pond at Wat Phra Non Chaksi's Thai Buffaloes Conservation Centre in Sing Buri province, while his two friends watched on. The boys flashed broad smiles and waved at a group of visitors from Bangkok who had come observe the animals and their way of life. The centre was set up in 2000 by Wat Phra Non Chaksi and Sing Buri Rotary Club. It takes care of water buffaloes rescued from slaughterhouses or donated by people, and lends them to needy farmers. The objective is two-fold: to educate the new generation about the traditional role of water buffaloes in farming, and honour the animal on which the heroes of Bang Rachan rode to battle against invaders from Myanmar. Each day scores of tourists visit this centre to observe the buffaloes, feed them grass and watch shows in which the animals demonstrate their agility, free of charge. Donations are welcome to support the centre's conservation work.

However, Bang Khen has interesting aspects for tourists to explore. It was once a battle field and boasts century-old communities, major temples, monuments and museums.
