Advice Needed About Father's Imminent Marriage

By Anonymous, Created on: 11/08/2007, Last updated on: 01/12/2007

» I wonder if anyone can offer me any urgently needed advice. My father is about to marry a Thai woman 40 years his junior. (He has been alone and divorced for over twenty years.) Whilst he is an intelligent man professionally, when it comes to 'matters of the heart' he is totally blinkered...

    • Anonymous commented : to end his loneliness in his waning years? If you have been distant from him and now express an interest in his well being, he is going to interpret that as that you may have more concern for your inheritance rather than his well being. As AD says, “He has lived a lonely life for many years, were you as concerned then !”. Rich says he can identify with your dad’s feelings. I can also identify with your dad’s feelings. Sure you may have a family, you may be busy, but have you called him or saw him at least once a week? If not, start doing it. So you can put all the obstacles in the way of marriage but unless you solve the core problem, that of your dad’s loneliness, by getting more involved in his life, than you cannot blame him for trying to find happiness elsewhere even though in the end it will most likely result in heartbreak. Sardines advice not to bring her back to the UK is spot on. Not only from the standpoint that his assets are safer if kept in the UK, but (in my experience) she will not adjust to life in the UK. We think that they come and see what a wonderful country we live in and, why wouldn’t you want to live here vs Thailand. But the Thais have a very strong attachment to Thailand and their family.

» Ms Noy’s gonna need some English lessons in order to pass her tests to prove that her command of the language is good enough before being granted her visa. The number of Thai women from the Northeast marrying foreigners is rising every year. Over the past few months, almost 2,000 people have shown...

    • luangtom commented : be able to do this now in our waning years. When asked why she did it and put up with it, her response is, "Thais, too, believe in for better or worse in a marriage". So, gents, it can be done, with lotsa hard work on the part of the party coming to a foreign land. We will reach our 40th anniversary this year and I can say it has been a roller-coaster life for my wife. I hope to make her last years better ones for her. She put up with me for this long and the least I can do is try to make her "golden years" good ones.

Learningpost, Dr B James Johnson, Published on 14/12/2010

» If a stranger told you that there is a Namibia-born South African who has been in Thailand only fi ve years and who could teach anyone to read Thai in a weekend, would you believe her? Gary Orman is that man and he promises that his "Read Thai in a Weekend" rapid language learning method can do just that. I repeat: in just two days (actually only 12 hours when you subtract the time for long lunches and multiple coffee klatches). If this sounds incredulous to you, you are not alone.
