» The atmosphere at the Jim Thompson Art Center is seemingly intimidating. Two larger-than-life rifles stand threateningly tall. In a 24-channel video installation, entitled The Game, we see military-clad twin brothers on a motorcycle, rifles in hands.

» In a stage performance that just finished its run on Sunday, performers re-enacted scenes in which victims were hunted, beaten and strangled to death. In an art exhibition opening tomorrow, we'll see in paintings traces of atrocious scenes in the foreground while the surface is heavily smudged with paint, to the point of abstraction.

» The place looks like a regular house in the suburban Pak Kret district, roughly one-hour drive out of Bangkok. Look closer, however, the house appears unlived, more like a warehouse with some sort of operation going on inside, and a walk round to its backyard reveals five massive hothouses which span 1,600m².

» It is only with reference to J-pop or K-pop that we have a clue as to what the word "T-pop" could possibly mean: an attempt at cultural export -- film, music and other forms of entertainment -- to create a "Thai brand" of cool. It's better late than never, so the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has recently launched a campaign, with Thai star Mario Maurer as the presenter, with the aim to boost tourism in Thailand and expand the entertainment market in China.

» Stepping into the dimly lit Jim Thompson Art Center, one immediately feels connected. The parade of motorcycles is more than a common sight in Bangkok. The colourful car headlining and flaring lights are reminiscent of a songthaew ride home. Other video installations featuring in the space's current exhibition "Missing Links" are instantaneously relatable, even without any explanatory text.
