When people browsed in bookshops

    Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/12/2023

» Earlier this week I watched the 1987 film 84 Charing Cross Road. The reason for my interest was that the road has always been my favourite London thoroughfare. The film, which I won't go into, is about a long-distance literary friendship between characters played by Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins.

It's time for 'cautious cuddling' in the UK

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/05/2021

» PostScript recently discussed how the month of May is looked upon fondly in Britain, partly because it heralds warmer weather. Admittedly summer in the UK can be rather brief, especially if the occluded fronts start misbehaving. It's no coincidence that the most common forecast in the British summer is "outlook changeable".

A lovely weekend of silly hats, headlines

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/05/2018

» I'm not exactly a fan of weddings, but it was almost impossible to escape last week's knees-up at Windsor Castle with ball-by-ball coverage on the major cable stations. Horses, hats, castles, queens, princesses, lords and ladies, dukes and duchesses and Elton John. Even the weather behaved. The Brits still know how to put on a good show. At least it was more entertaining than the FA Cup final which followed.

Reading habits that come to a dead end

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 29/04/2018

» The other evening, I had just finished the crime thriller Time of Death by Mark Billingham and put it in my bookcase where it nestled next to Stephen Leather's Dead Men.

Time is on your side … if the watch is fast

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/01/2018

» Recent debate about fancy timepieces had me thinking about my first ever watch, which my dad bought when I was a kid. He was a stickler for punctuality and hated being late for anything. When he gave me the watch it came with sage-like advice. He told me to always set it a few minutes fast so I wouldn't be late, and to this day it has proved wise counsel. Of course it didn't stop me being late, but at least I was two or three minutes earlier in my lateness than I would otherwise have been, if that makes sense.

The day it rained on the Pattaya parade

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/11/2017

» The weather was a bit sneaky in the past week, with the sailors involved in the grand parade of the International Fleet Review having to slosh their way through Pattaya floodwater on Beach Road after an untimely storm.

The hills are alive with the sound of Gaga

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/03/2015

» In an otherwise underwhelming Oscars ceremony, the stand-out moment came from a most unexpected source. Not being a fan of Lady Gaga, I was quite stunned by her performance of a medley from The Sound of Music, in honour of the film’s 50th anniversary.

Bangkok is well and truly going to the dogs

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 13/07/2014

» While Bangkok is known as the City of Angels, among other things, some might argue that City of Stray Dogs might be more appropriate. There have been assorted proposals designed to solve this problem of wandering woofers, none of which have made much impression.

Running out of steam aboard the gravy train

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/08/2013

» It was encouraging to see Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was courageous enough to host a meeting aboard a train from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom. Fortunately it made it to its destination without falling off the rails or breaking down, which these days is quite an achievement. With the PM being a committed fan of high-speed trains, it must have been torture for her as the train ambled along at 40kph.

The 'bear of very little brain' and wobbly spelling

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 13/01/2013

» Many will say that it is impossible to have a quiet New Year in Isan, but my wife and I somehow managed it, a reflection of getting wrinkly one fears. But to look on the positive side, I am now the proud possessor of a yellow Winnie-the-Pooh mug, courtesy of a couple of farmers' kids who live next door to us in deepest Chaiyaphum.
