After graduating from Chulalongkorn University, the creative director of Thea by Thara (www.theabythara.com, fb.com/Theabythara, IG: @theabythara) flew to the Big Apple to attend the prestigious Parsons The New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Taking advantage of the experience she gained in the fashion industry, Tawanna, then age 26, started her eponymous clothing line, Thara, collections of which were sold in over 30 boutique stores in the US, the UK and Dubai. After returning to Bangkok in 2012, she debuted Thea by Thara, a sister brand showcasing a fusion of New York minimal coolness and feminine delicacy. Currently, Thea by Thara has five outlets in the city and expansions in Singapore, Indonesia and China.

» Wirin Chaowana, 23, calls herself a “paper craft designer”. She took a whole semester to cut, fold, bend, shape and glue sheets of paper into 3D sculptures of Thai traditional floral works. Conventional garlands, floral pendants and other traditional flower decorations have been turned into visually engaging sharp geometric forms and have won a number of accolades for this new visual communication design grad from Silpakorn University. Aptly named Pub Piab Riab Roy (fb.com/PubPiabRiabRoy), Wirin’s ingenious paper creations have been included in the exhibition POP BY TCDCCONNECT: “LOVE YOUR LOCAL”, on at Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC) until Feb 27 (see Art, p15).

» With an unusual background, Wiracha Daochai, 29, possesses unconventional materials and perspectives for writing. Having grown up in a monastery, he spent eight years in the monkhood where he occupied himself with books. Thanks to his artistic instinct and imaginative mind, he secretly put pen to paper and sent his short stories to magazines. He had his first work printed when he was 14. His first paperback, Satanee Tor Pai (Next Station), written under the pseudonym “Larn Chai (Grandson)”, was published when he was 18. The wordsmith later entered the Faculty of Arts at Chulalongkorn University. Outside the classroom, he worked as a freelance columnist for a number of respected magazines, a creative at an entertainment conglomerate and a lyricist who penned for rock heavyweights like Bodyslam and Big Ass. Wiracha recently released a series of 10 stimulating short stories, Fon Aoey Tummai Jueng Tok (Why Is It Raining?), under small publishing house Yeti (fb.com/readyeti), which he co-founded with a group of bibliophilic friends.
