    Hiding in plain sight

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 24/12/2020

» I'm no fan of paintings but I understand folks who are able to enjoy a visual feast by masters such as the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci or Vincent Van Gogh. I do the same every time I find myself in a magnificent landscape. Indeed, Mother Nature is my favourite artist.

The long and the short of it

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 18/01/2018

» 'Normally, how many kilometres do you bike?" This is one of the questions people often ask me when they learn that I like to cycle. And the most exact answer I could come up with would be: "It depends."

    Backpedalling

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 25/02/2016

» A couple of weeks ago as I was reorganising my hard drive, I hit on picture folders that contain photos from trips to Khao Fah Lap. Dating back to 2006, they made me realise that it had been quite a while already that I haven't been to those mountains of Lop Buri province virtually unknown to most people but regarded with legendary status among hard-core off-road drivers. It's been 10 years!

    Biking on the fly

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 03/09/2015

» A reason single tracks are fun to ride is that they're not always the same. Mountain bikers, especially downhillers, are well aware that the character of each trail changes at different times of year. In the dry months, for example, you may have fallen leaves obscuring ruts or rocks along the way, while on any day in the monsoon season you may have fallen branches or even an entire tree blocking your path.

Forget the flagfall, go by bike

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 05/12/2013

» Biking and political conflicts don't often mix. But over the past weeks cyclists and their beloved rigs, from foldies, fixies and BMXs to road and mountain bikes have been a common sight at anti-government protests scattered around many parts of the capital.

    Sun, sand, sea and cycling

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 31/01/2013

» There are various reasons why Rayong province's Koh Samet is one of the all-time favourite islands among Thai holidaymakers. Of course, I have a few of my own too, for example, the fine sand there is unmatched and, unlike other popular islands, virtually all the beaches are accessible to the public; the sea is among the clearest in the Gulf of Thailand; it's not very far from Bangkok, and accommodation is affordable.

    Bicycle seats of learning

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/01/2013

» Perhaps when the bicycle was invented almost two centuries ago its creator was unaware of the potential impact the two-wheeler would have on the planet.

Good things come in small packages

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 06/09/2012

» Covering less than 60km2, Chalerm Rattanakosin National Park in Kanchanaburi province is one of the Kingdom's tiniest. Yet, this is a case where the term "small is beautiful" is obviously an understatement. Small can be awesome.

    Hues of Hokkaido

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 02/08/2012

» Two years ago I visited Hokkaido for the first time. The northern island of Japan was virtually all white, covered with snow which attracted hordes of winter sports lovers from over the world. I was there again last week. This time it's summer, the season when Hokkaido's amazing array of colours is most vividly exposed.

    New fun on wheels

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/01/2012

» When I was little, my mother bought me a tricycle. It didn't look as cool as the bikes older boys were riding but I couldn't blame her because what she did seemed like a logical first step. After all, three wheels were evidently easier to handle and thus safer than two wheels.
