By xamde, Created on: 02/12/2014, Last updated on: 27/02/2015

» I'm really bored with taxi in Thailand. They all are so picky. They always reject me when I tell where I wanna go. When I use taxi in England and Australia, they always accept. I really feel bad that Uber gonna be ban in Thailand. I am waiting to see government deal with this unethical taxi drivers....

    • BenNallay commented : Once in 2006 I got quoted 700 baht from a taxi driver parked on the Asoke end of Soi Cowboy to get to the Tiwanon-Chaengwattana 4-way in Nonthaburi. I told him he was a bit of a buffalo and walked down to Sukhumvit for a meter taxi, which came to under 200 by the time I got home. The succeessful taxi driver got a 100 baht tip as a direct result of the scammer I'd encountered in Bangkok. Another time in 2006, I had some luggage to move from the office in Pak Kret to my home around 1km up Chaengwattana so I flagged a taxi rather than walk it. Unbeknowns to me, I was standing at the side of the road at a bus stop, and as soon as the taxi pulled up to where my luggage was on the footpath, a cop booked the driver 400 baht for parking in a bus stop, (apparently). I gave him 250 for a 50 baht fare to split the fine 50-50. I still don't know if the whole thing was legit' or not, but it was unfair however you look at the reality. Unfair on the driver, so I tried to reduce the harm a bit. Maybe they were scamming me ? Good luck to them splitting that $6 AUD. The last taxi I took was private affair to get me from Hat Yai to Malaysia and back for 900 (100 tip is probably a bit kee niaw) and before that a 2,000 baht price from Rayong bus station to Hualampong in Bangkok, (500 tip plus a bottle of that Sonai Oil or whatever they call it to help his cough). I've always found every taxi I've ever taken in Thailand to be at least satisfactory, and usually excellent, and they speak the native language better than some of the Australian taxi drivers I've had to fork out for to the airport over the years. It's good to be able to say the words for Go, Stop, Left Right, Slow Down in the right language when required. I can't really support what you say about ethics at all. Maybe I've just been lucky for the past 9.5 years?
