    Hey, soul sister

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 20/01/2017

» When Lezlie Harrison sings, she captures the attention of the whole room. We've had the pleasure of listening in on one of the nights she was performing and we fell head over heels with her sound and bubbly personality. Hailing from New York, she has returned to our beloved city and graced us with her original take on jazz, blues and soul music at The Living Room. Guru chats to her as she lets us in on her favourite artists, what she thinks about the jazz bars in Bangkok and a few of the non-touristy must-do's if we ever find ourselves in the Big Apple.

    Dye hard

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 01/04/2016

» Life in Bangkok can often be described as fast and furious, but if you're stuck in the usual rush-hour traffic jam, painstakingly slow would also jump to mind. Kanchalee "Ann" Ngamdamronk and Sergey Tishkin first met in Japan, where they both completed a special art course in hand dying textiles. They returned to Thailand and founded Slowstitch Studio, where they work with traditional (albeit time-consuming) methods and botanical materials to create individually hand-dyed textiles. Guru chats with Ann to find out what it's like to work with your other half and why dying your own fabrics at home isn't as complicated as you'd think.

    Swish and sizzle

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 25/03/2016

» Now, we know Salaya may seem a bit out of the way from somewhere like mid-Sukhumvit, but our venture to this low-key part of outer Bangkok proved to be more than worthwhile. Surprisingly, it only took us half an hour to get there, which is about the same amount of time you'd spend being stuck in Thong Lor's traffic on the weekend. Despite the fact that the owners are the same people behind Shabu King, this new joint is vastly different. Forget the lacklustre atmosphere of cramped spaces (like most shabu destinations) and say hello to a stunning countryside-style Japanese barn. The high ceilings let in plenty of natural light during the day time, which will no doubt impress any Instagrammer out there looking to snap up some serious #foodporn worthy photos of shabu shabu platters and sushi rolls.

    Power up

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 11/03/2016

» Last month we rushed to see Deadpool. This month it's all about Batman V Superman. And what's that we hear? X-Men: Apocalypse is coming in May? Our obsession with ridiculously chiseled people in capes, red underwear and crazy healing abilities never ceases. If you're wondering why none of these movies are ever based Bangkok, Dear Readers, it's because not everyone with super powers is suited for our beloved city.

    Thong Lor to-do

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 29/01/2016

» Let's start with what we love about hi-so stomping ground Thong Lor: Sightings of Ferraris revving their engines even though they're stuck in 10kph Friday traffic. The utter looks of disbelief of which only rich kids are capable, after they find out there's no valet parking. New bistros, the lifespan of which are approximately three-months before disappearing from the face of the Earth.

    Let's roll

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 22/01/2016

» Not to sound like an uncivilised Bangkokian, too uncouth and ill-groomed to fit in with the well-mannered hi-sos who ever-so-graciously provide our city with such sophistication and class, but I've found myself, on various occasions, without the time to sit down and enjoy a proper lunch. I've actually become incredibly adept at eating on the go. Literally. I can speed walk while enjoying a 7-Eleven sandwich with ease, and I've even mastered the eating-and-driving manoeuvre. Is it safe? Probably not. But when you're living in this traffic-clogged metropolis, you learn to multitask.

    Post-new year's syndrome

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/01/2016

» Let's nip this in the bud. Holiday season is officially over. Phew, and we thought that was going to be hard to say. As it turns out, writing it down is much easier.Since we're not ones to mope nor sulk about how we've already broken the resolutions we set seven days ago (thanks to that piece of leftover cake in the fridge), we thought it best to give you, Dear Readers, a quick rundown on how to get over holiday withdrawal and grab life by the horns (and 2016 by the balls).

    In the hot seat

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 04/12/2015

» When conversing about Chinese cuisine in Bangkok, the mention of Chef Man Wai Yin and his restaurant Chef Man is inevitable. Who popularised the lava bun? He did. Whose restaurant once had a month-long waiting list? Guilty. He managed to turn ubiquitous dim sum into a new dining experience with his restaurants. Then came the fancy flair and five-star presentation of M Krub, which seems to have won over those foodies who could afford it. His latest venture, Chairman, is a world apart, spurning lazy Susans, leather seats and tablecloths, and instead looking back to childhood days in Hong Kong spent at a traditional cha chaan teng (local cafe or eatery). Chairman’s decor is reminiscent of exactly that, with vintage tiles, wooden counters, iron partitions and verdant green window panes looking out on a 2D mock-up of a sea of neon-lit billboards. Surprisingly, the cafe hits the casual mark for which it was aiming, avoiding gimmickry — a difficult task indeed, especially when you’ve set up shop inside a glitzy mall.
