    America bashing at Esplanade Mall

By gohmer, Created on: 09/05/2010, Last updated on: 11/06/2011

» I putting this post up because it is related to international relationships with American citizens living and visiting Thailand. It illustrated to me that little is known about America by most people in Thailand, in fact, I think that few in the world truly understand what America is about and how...

    • Noah Shepherd commented : [quote:106ojxvj]700,000 US citizens come and spend money here as tourists every year [/quote:106ojxvj] Yes, it's called international trade. In return for providing goods and services, the seller receives cash and the deal is done. No thank you letters or gratitude required. It's not just Uncle Sam coming here and spending money. There is plenty of trade done in the other direction as well. Two tier priced higher education programmes where overseas students pay more in non state funded, private universities. Look at all of those cars that are made by USA joint venture factories such as GM and Ford (who are only partly here because of the cheap labour) ... well, they are bought and driven by Thais. It is basic economics 101 - there is no such thing as a one way flow of capital. [quote:106ojxvj] how many times America has aided Thailand over the past 70+ years, and the proof that we have had a great business relationship is the fact we are simply the only country that has a special treaty - "Amity" - allowing Americans to own 100% of a business here. [/quote:106ojxvj] The US Thai Treaty of Amity agreement originally dates back to 1833 when Andrew Jackson was President and Rama III was King, that's 167 years by my sums. The agreement was the precursor to increased international trade and investment, not as a result of it as OP alludes to; so it is not "proof" at all. (Under WTO rules, the Amity agreement is technically illegal, but that's another story.) Have a nice day.
