    A taxing argument

    News, Postbag, Published on 24/03/2019

» A reader in his March 23 letter makes a fair comment on two-tiered pricing for foreigners. But he then goes on to quantify the government's policy of a two-tiered charging system by saying that some farang do not pay taxes. I would dispute this. I am assuming by "some farang" he means tourists, as all foreigners living and working here pay tax in one form or another.

Rice and mango banquet no way to show 'we care'

News, Atiya Achakulwisut, Published on 22/01/2019

» How far will almost five tonnes of sticky rice and mango go in assuring Chinese tourists that it's now safe to travel to Thailand and that one of the country's top ministers has adopted a more respectful attitude towards them?

    Dark enough for you?

Asia focus, Erich Parpart, Published on 20/08/2018

» 'Dark tourism" is an interesting concept that did not come to my attention until I watched a Netflix series recently. Few countries actively promote offbeat or slightly dangerous pursuits but it's a niche with potential, if managed carefully -- even if it's hard to explain to your insurer.

    A better Korean option

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 06/05/2019

» South Korea is one of the most popular destinations for Thais -- both tourists and illegal workers. According to the Ministry of Labour, there are 165,854 Thais living in South Korea, 143,169 of them illegally. Such a large number of illegal workers has caused Korean immigration officers to strictly screen Thai visitors. On April 20, a Facebook user shared a post saying that only five Thai passengers from a low-cost flight could get through Seoul, while the rest were detained for deportation. On the post, many comments blamed illegal workers for causing trouble for those attempting to travel legitimately. An unlawful worker defended himself by saying others didn't have sympathy for his poverty.

    Democratic justice

    News, Postbag, Published on 13/04/2019

» I wish to thank the 12 diplomats and their respective democratic countries for finally supporting the Thai people. Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai's comment, "It's an intervention in our justice system" is a joke. Without a truly democratically elected government there is no justice.

    Fifty fascinating years in Wonderland

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/04/2019

» Having first arrived in Thailand a few days before Songkran, each year the festival approaches it sparks memories of those early days in the Kingdom. This year is slightly more significant because earlier this week marked my 50th year in Thailand, or to put it another way, roughly 18,250 days. That sounds decidedly scary. The frightening thing is that I can remember those early days better than the events of last week. The immature youth is now an immature wrinkly.

Phuket boat tragedy shows our indifference

News, Ploenpote Atthakor, Published on 09/07/2018

» Forty-two is the latest number of tourists who fell victims to a boat mishap in Phuket last week. Or should I say, to be more exact, that they were victims of negligence, sheer dereliction of duty of the authorities concerned and of a "This Is Thailand" culture?

City commuters stuck in spider's web of delays

News, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 05/04/2019

» How many cards must a Bangkokian carry with them just so they can make their way through the ever-so busy and bustling capital? No, I'm not talking about credit, debit, or loyalty reward cards. I'm talking about the cards that a commuter must carry just so that can move from Point A to B.
