    More than 'som tam'

    News, Postbag, Published on 11/05/2019

» It is indeed good news to know that the Maya Bay closure will be extended until 2021. (BP, May 9). Last year's closure resulted in ecological recovery, which is a promising sign. To be frank, I previously did not think Thais could put short-term self interest aside and cooperate for long-term benefits. It's also good news that they will implement the online e-ticketing system for transparency purposes.

    Plundered budget

    News, Postbag, Published on 17/05/2019

» Since the start of the coup and Thailand's dictatorial control, the national budget has been plundered by the military. With so many social pressures supposedly causing the need for a coup, the dictator and his underlings have seen it fit to purchase submarines, tanks, military aircraft, and now Stryker armoured vehicles. How do these expenditures truly serve the people?

    Born to love noise

    News, Postbag, Published on 04/06/2019

» Daniel Reid in his June 3 letter, "Kill noise monsters", is right. There is a department to deal with noise pollution. I found this office at the Bangkok City Hall about 15 or so years ago, tucked away in a corner, staffed by 10 people, all who were playing computer games when I walked in. I was there to file a noise complaint. None of the staff knew where to find the complaint forms to fill in. When a form was eventually produced, there was little enthusiasm for anyone to listen or help out. I finally went outside to find "someone in authority" to light a fire under these people. At least I got the ball rolling after a few hours that should have taken a few minutes.

    The glue doesn't stick

    News, Postbag, Published on 16/06/2019

» The excuse that the "skewed scales must have been due to poor glueing during its making" offered by the director of the Chumpholphonphisai School in explanation for the controversial Wai Kru flower arrangements as reported in the Bangkok Post's June 15 edition, is priceless.

    Thank you, 'Mali San'

    News, Postbag, Published on 24/08/2019

» We Thais owe many, many thanks to "Mali-San" or Ms Megumi Morimoto, 46, a freshman at Kasetsart University's Sakolnakorn campus. As shown by the clip on Facebook by Udomsak Nak-chang-in and on television, she's been blocking motorcyclists from illegally riding their bikes on the sidewalk at Rumsalee intersection, thus protecting pedestrians from being run over. She's done this over 100 times. Although local bikers have beaten her up four times, Thai onlookers have rescued her.

    Better safe than sorry

    News, Postbag, Published on 30/01/2020

» Thailand's very fortunate that we've had only a few cases of coronavirus to date but for-hire drivers, such as those of taxis, Grab, tour drivers and guides should wear surgical masks whenever they're in contact with others. This is to protect them from possibly becoming infected from their passengers or tour members and to lessen the chances of them infecting others.

    Incomplete strategy

    News, Postbag, Published on 28/03/2020

» There is an incompatibility between closing bars but not closing public transport, which raises the question of the effectiveness of the current measures that have been taken.
