On the run with Toon again

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 31/08/2018

» On Dec 25 last year, the entire nation cheered on Artiwara "Toon" Kongmalai as he crossed the finish line in Mae Sai, the northernmost district of the country. It was the completion of his much-celebrated, and much-debated, 55-day charity run to raise funds for 11 public hospitals. The "Kao Kon La Kao" project covered a distance of 2,215km, starting from the country's southern tip in Betong, Yala, and arriving up north in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai. Over 1 billion baht was raised from the run.

    Evocative hymn to Thai rice

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 23/01/2015

» This is the film you simply have to see this weekend. Uruphong Raksasad's Pleng Khong Kao (The Songs Of Rice) is a lyrical poetry of image and sound, as beautiful as 19th-century pastoral paintings and as evocative as murmured hymns. In a compact 75 minutes, we see muddied beasts stomping the paddies and whirring tractors aglow with nocturnal eyes; we hear the chanting for the Rice Goddess and rhythmic windpipe numbers for the harvest dance. We even marvel, unlikely as it seems, at a zonk-out sci-fi rendition of a northeastern rocket festival, ablaze with fire and sparks and songs and joy.

Good week for stocks as concerns EASE about fed

    Business, Published on 23/11/2015

» Recap: The deadly attacks in Paris and minutes of the October Federal Reserve meeting, which appeared to point to a December interest-rate increase, rattled global stock markets early last week. However, investors went on a buying spree later as they took a deeper look at the Fed minutes and concluded any action would be gradual. Better-than-expected GDP data for Thailand in the third quarter also lent some support to Thai shares.
