Resplendent sand pagoda

» Once a year this large sand pagoda is erected within the grounds of Wat Jetlin in Chiang Mai to celebrate Songkran. According to the wat's abbot Phra Maha Visanu, the pagoda was built because of an old belief that whenever someone visited the temple, they unintentionally carried away little grains of sand or dirt on their shoes. So, during the Songkran festival, it is time to return them to the temple.

» The size of a leafroller moth is small. It's a mere 1-1.5cm from the tip of the left to the right wing. It may be overlooked by many, but not by Nantasak Pinkaew. The 45-year-old moth taxonomist has found two new tortricid moth genera -- Sirindhornia and Kasetsartra -- and 27 species in the past 18 years. At present he is a lecturer at the Department of Entomology of Kasetsart University and the only expert in leafroller moths in Thailand.

Sipping tea in the forest

» Tea pickers, each having a bamboo basket on one side, walked in a row on their way out of a tea plantation. It was late afternoon. The sky was clear and the sunlight was about to turn yellow. My travel companions and I ambled along the same road but in the opposite direction of the tea pickers. We were on our way to the tea farm to have our tea-picking experience.
