    Cheating the cheaters

    Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 30/05/2013

» Foreign workers are useful. They fill the jobs we don’t have the proper skills to do, or the jobs that we simply don’t want to do.

    There are no 'buffaloes'

    Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 20/06/2013

» In this heated political divide, the mud-slinging includes terms like "yellow/multi-colour buffalo fascists, brainwashed tools of the ammart" and "red buffalo thugs, brainwashed tools of Thaksin [Shinawatra]". Such insulting, derogatory branding is not only unfair and in poor taste, it’s also a gross generalisation that carries little truth.

In the name of freedom and democracy

    Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 07/02/2013

» Sex tourism? The country's image? Baa-hum-bug! The fact of life is, if we don't take care of our own daughters, then some old, hairy foreigner will. For that matter, if we don't take care of our own daughters, then some old, hairless Thai will. There are two sides - at least - to every coin.

Passion and logic, Duality of love

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 30/12/2012

» As 2012 winds down let's examine the duality of love in the context of Thai culture, not least of which because I'm in the mood to party and couldn't care less about the news and what's going on in politics. We'll save that for next year, after I sober up. Instead, let's ponder philosophically on romance. An unexamined life is not worth living; an unexamined society is not worth living in.

New BBC programme 'To focus on thailand's character not cliches'

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 03/06/2012

» The international media and Thailand are not always on good terms. Rightly or wrongly, the world media have been accused of bias, ill informed opinions and stereotypical portrayals in their coverage of the Kingdom. These accusations come from government agencies, the civil sector and ordinary citizens.

An 'Outsider' shows that we're good at faking it

B Magazine, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 03/06/2012

» Socrates said an unexamined life is not worth living and while most of us would agree, we'd rather not have other people doing the examining. Self-awareness is one thing _ being naked to the eyes of the world is another. But once you get past the shame and think beyond vanity, opening oneself up to the world in this way can be educational and make us better people.

    Painting a picture

» Plainclothes police are staking out the hideout, snipers lock on to their targets from the tops of surrounding buildings and a truckload of Swat team members are hiding nearby _ it's the quiet before the storm. Suspects all accounted for in the hideout, check. Certain evidence confirmed in the hideout, check. Communication lines secured, neighbourhood cleared, weapons locked and loaded, full metal jackets in place, check, check and check.

    Trust no One

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 22/01/2012

» Some have expressed incredulity that Thailand could possibly be a target for international terrorists. But why should anyone be incredulous? Are we not standing at the gateway of the Golden Triangle, renowned for its drug trade? Have we forgotten a Russian arms dealer named Viktor Bout? Are we not familiar with the presence of international organised crime gangs in cities like Bangkok and Pattaya? Most anyone can come and go, or come and stay with visa runs.
