Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 22/03/2017
» There has been much written about the Internet of Things (IoT): devices that are connected, interconnected and linked via our smartphones, computers and web technology. The IoT brief covers a wide range of devices for industry, home and health, with some crossovers. One example is the sports-related device that records personal inputs -- these also have a relevance to health.

iPhone proves it's in rude health
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 21/09/2016
» The iPhone 7 was released last week and carriers were reporting higher pre-orders than any iPhone before. Apple also put out several software updates last Wednesday. I spent all that day and part of Thursday catching up. Apps were being updated too, taking advantage of some of the new features. On Thursday, I was still finding out what was new and where some features had been hidden.

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 07/09/2016
» In a few hours, Apple will hold an event at the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco. Most expect new iPhones will be announced. Depending on when they go on sale, we could see the next version of iOS by Friday.

» In a couple of weeks, Apple will announce its third-quarter results for 2016. The conference call is scheduled for July 26, at 2pm Pacific Time, which is around 5am here. This is expected to be a poorer quarter, but so was the last one, and Apple still had a US$10 billion profit.

Flexible iOS devices and a mix of speculation
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/08/2015
» This week, my friends have been trying out their new iPad mini devices. Neither of them has totally switched to the newer models, partly because of content. More money, Mac problems
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/12/2014
» Macs sometimes go wrong. Many problems may be software-related, but I have had hardware let me down too. My 12-inch PowerBook needed battery replacement under an Apple programme, and a later MacBook Pro ate a battery every year. Two computers had hard disk failures: a 15-inch MacBook Pro under warranty, and my iMac after five years of use. With backups, I lost no data.

Read before you agree, buy or update
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 12/11/2014
» My new iPhone 6 arrived last Thursday instead of the Friday Apple had indicated. I waited until I arrived home to set it up from the iCloud backup. The transfer took about 15 minutes, but then some apps also had to be downloaded. After that was done, I synchronised music and photographs using USB. The job was finished just after midnight.

External forces and confusion on Apple
Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/10/2014
» What started well with reports of 10 million devices sold in the first week that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were available, turned into something of a disaster when a video of an iPhone Plus that bent was posted on YouTube, and social media took over.

Proof that even Microsoft can listen to the critics
Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 15/12/2010
» The eXtensions column has not been particularly pro-Microsoft over the years. My students think I hate Bill Gates. Although that is untrue, I do maintain the fiction in class. Some of my colleagues would not change from Redmond's offerings, and for sound reasons.

Unleash your creative capabilities with iLife
Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 24/11/2010
» This is my third look at iLife '11, which includes GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb. Although iTunes is a part of iLife and it integrates with the other parts, it is installed and updated separately, because of its functions as a conduit for online services and synchronising of iOS devices, like the iPhone.
