The world of webtops
Database, Gotfried. K, Published on 01/12/2010

After all, a webtop is simply a web page that acts like a computer operating system. The webtop screen looks a lot like your computer desktop, offering access to email, calendaring, word processing, instant messaging and so on - some even come with their own web browser (a browser within a browser - what's the point of that?).

» It's no secret that I suffer from bipolar disorder, a major mental disorder, which is not so much an illness as a chemical imbalance in the brain. It has made my life like a nonstop rollercoaster ride _ up and down, year after year, stumbling from one self-induced disaster to the next, not realising until I was about 40 that there was something seriously amiss. With medication, the road has been smoothed somewhat, though I often feel like a zombie, which is neither good nor bad; not really much of anything at all.

» What is a webtop and why would you want one? First of all, a webtop is an Internet page that is basically an all-in-one computer system, usually featuring an email client, a word processor, a calendar program, and so on. As to why you might want one, there could be any number of reasons: students in a classroom might find having a webtop a convenient way to communicate with teachers, keep up with scheduled events, or a place to store files. Rather than outfitting each computer in the classroom with all the necessary software for these tasks, the teacher can just have the students create a webtop, which they can then sign on to and do their work.

Half a century of frustration

» Computers are incredibly annoying, which is odd because operating systems got their start back in the 1950s. That's right: more than 50 years ago! More than 50 years of "development" and my personal computer (running a legal copy of Windows XP) still crashes. Still!

Singing the same old vapourware song

» According to recent reports in the tech press, Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser recently dropped to below 60 percent in market share, down from a high of 95 percent back in 2003. For many reasons, this is excellent news. But another report, on the other hand, demonstrates that Microsoft has not given up on its bag of tricks, the sort of tricks that helped Internet Explorer supposedly ''win'' the browser war in the first place.

» It had to end and a victor had to emerge. We’re talking about the Browser War that raged across the computer landscape back in the early 1990s. When the Internet first came to prominence, it was very much because of the Netscape browser, which made “surfing the Web†a far less complicated affair than it had been previously.
