Five things you need to know this week

Muse, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 24/09/2016

» 1 Treat yourself to some of the best short films in recent Thai history with Lost In Blue, a collection of three student-made films revolving around various types of heartbreak. The three films (Wannan Kong Duen -- That Day Of The Month, Rain and Glowstick) -- directed by recent graduates of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Communication Arts -- have collectively won various awards both in Thailand and abroad. The long list of accolades includes the White Elephant Film Award, the Young Thai Artist Award, and, most prominently, the Special Jury Mention award from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. The latter is known as one of the most prestigious short-film competitions in the world, and that makes Wannan Kong Duen one of only two Thai short films ever to win an award at the competition. The film is being shown exclusively at SF World Cinema, CentralWorld.

    Please, touch the art

» It's not easy learning art when you can't see. For many blind or visually-impaired students in a regular school curriculum, art class can become a tedious and limited affair. While they may be able to memorise names and dates for a quiz, blind students can struggle to keep up with their visually normal peers in more practical tasks or assignments, creating a gap between the capabilities of visually-impaired and regular students.

    Learning from history

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 28/08/2017

» I recently watched Netflix's Death Note adaptation, officially released last Friday on the streaming site. Based on a famous Japanese manga series, the film revolves around a young man's twisted crusade for justice after having received a special notebook -- the titular death note -- that has the power to kill anyone whose name has been written in it, provided the writer knows their face. Fed up with the many injustices in the world, the young man -- named Light -- uses the note to kill bullies, criminals and even corrupt officials from around the world under the alter-ego Kira, earning a cult-like following from those who agree with his extreme brand of justice.

And a child shall lead them

» In 1989, the world was sent reeling following the horrifying massacre at Tiananmen Square, when the Communist regime of the People's Republic of China (as ironic today as it was all those years ago) ruthlessly mowed down hundreds of unarmed pro-democracy protesters. The massacre sent a stern message to the people of China as well as the entire world from the regime: the Communist Party will not be swayed by dissension of any kind, and will eliminate those standing in its way.

Thai game developers dream of bigger payday

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 07/09/2016

» To become a video game developer is a dream that has most likely crossed the mind of anyone who enjoyed playing video games as a child. However, very few have ever managed to realise that dream as adults. As such, no one ever expected Thailand to place first at this year's Microsoft Imagine Cup 2016, where the grand prize went to Thailand's team PH21 -- a group of graduates from Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Engineering -- and their mobile game Timelie.

Siam Square's night of the living dead

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 31/03/2017

» Siam Square needs no introduction. With a history dating back to the 1970s, the shopping district remains the prime meeting spot for today's Bangkok youth, with plenty of shops, restaurants and a building literally made of tutoring schools. It's not the kind of place you'd expect to associate with a horror film, which is exactly what makes Siam Square, the directorial-debut of Pairat Kumwan, so interesting.

    The power of love

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 24/05/2016

» Love -- as many of us are perhaps too painfully aware -- can sometimes be as bitter as it can be sweet. Like the age old adage tells us, "where there is love, there is suffering"; and yet, love seems to be one of those things that is universally coveted by mankind, as if we expect this ethereal concept of expectations and desire to be the answer to all the world's woes. But what happens when love seems to be the source of those woes? Is it still worth it to hold on to love, even if we are slowly damning ourselves to a lifetime of suffering?
