A subpar comeback

» Along with popular franchises like Iron Man and Spider-Man, Ant-Man is one of my favourites of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe mainly because the stories are different and focus on family drama that is entertaining, lighthearted and never takes itself too seriously.

» Veteran filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda became known after winning the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for the crime drama Shoplifters despite having directed films and TV series for nearly three decades. Renowned for his gentle sense of pacing, simple yet beautiful cinematography, and a focus on the complexities of family relationships, he showcased his skills in previous works such as After The Storm (2016), Like Father, Like Son (2013) and Nobody Knows (2004). However, the one that has stuck in my mind to this day is Our Little Sister (2015), a female-focused drama that gave us a cosy, heartwarming family story, along with rich cultural and beautiful vistas of the Japanese countryside.

There have been plenty of movies and documentaries covering this topic, from Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin's The Rescue and Ron Howard's thrilling drama Thirteen Lives to Emmy-winner Pailin Wedel's upcoming documentary The Trapped 13: How We Survived The Thai Cave.
A different kind of superhero

» The days of superheroes being limited to one ethnicity are over. In the past few years, it seems that Marvel and Disney have realised that audiences want more stars to look up to. Last year, we saw Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings become the latest record-breaking Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie that gave Asian actors an opportunity to be a superhero, the same that Black Panther (2018) and Captain Marvel (2019) did for black and female-led casts.
Sandler's Hustle is a Euro step redemption tale

» Whether it's because he has reached a saturation point with goofy comedies, or because he's too old to lead a romantic comedy, in the past few years, Adam Sandler has turned to more mature, dramatic roles. If you've seen his ventures into indie films like Punch-Drunk Love (2002), The Meyerowitz Stories (2017) or more recently Uncut Gems (2019), you'll notice that Sandler has a dramatic side to him that's surprisingly impressive. Now Sandler's back with another dramatic turn in Hustle, a Netflix sports drama where he plays a basketball scout looking for the next great player. Hustle feels like Jerry Maguire meets Rocky. It is a heartfelt, uplifting underdog movie that also serves as a love letter to the NBA.

Shock without substance

» The crime drama rollercoaster Ozark finally ended after four exhilarating seasons. The story revolves around financial adviser Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) who move the family from Chicago to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, to run a money-laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel, only to become deeply entangled with local criminals and later the Kansas City Mafia.
This Gyllenhaal watch can be enjoyed to the end

» Over the past few decades, we have seen Jake Gyllenhaal's massive transformation from being a Hollywood teenage heartthrob into one of the most diverse acting resumes around. Some of his best roles recently, usually revolve around high drama stories or within crime and thriller genres, like David Ayer's cop drama End Of Watch, Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners (2013) or Dan Gilroy's thriller Nightcrawler (2014). In between those years, Gyllenhaal's fun and expressive eyes became less reactive and more serious and grim. The Guilty, a new Netflix drama, feels almost like a continuation of that same persona by Gyllenhaal but with a unique and gripping story about a police officer at a 911 call centre in a high-stakes game against time to stop a kidnapping. It's a remake of the 2018 Danish film of the same name, directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day (2001), Brooklyn's Finest (2009) and Southpaw (2015) fame.
