    Mussels from brussels

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 20/04/2012

» A new heavy hitter representing Belgium has entered the city's competitive French culinary arena, and we're not talking about Jean-Claude Van Damme, the "Muscles from Brussels".

    Fusion peruvian

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 18/05/2012

» Rather than joining the eateries spreading out sideways in every direction from Sukhumvit, one venue has taken the challenge to new heights - the 33rd floor, in fact. Above Eleven is the latest to join the new wave of venues at the top end of Soi 11. But in a soi trying to digest a host of new eateries, what could another one bring to the table? Above Eleven's unique two-pronged attack involves a Peruvian fusion kitchen and a sweeping panorama of Bangkok's smog-fuelled sunset, going against the grain of new French bistros and burger outlets popping up everywhere; and it might just work.

    Charm of the Siam

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 21/09/2012

» The audacity! Opening a hotel with such a grand name as The Siam seems awfully ambitious, we thought. It reminds us of the 80s band Europe, the group named for a continent that delivered a lot less than their title promised. Why didn't they just call the hotel "The Bomb" and be done with it?

    In Print

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 01/03/2013

» Although it sounds like either a journalist watering hole (moths to the light), or a disused printing factory, Thong Lor newcomer print bar is both neither and a lot more. The first child of ex-hotel-F&B-man David Stanton instead utilises the motif of the print media industry - the world of graphic icons, where image is everything, surface reigns supreme - to lure us in. But the laidback Kiwi has also tried to put a neighbourhood spin on things as well (albeit in one of the biggest bridge-and-tunnel destinations of the city). The result? A luring but slightly confused bar on the bustling Thong Lor watering strip, located both geographically and conceptually in the middle of big players Gossip and Soul Food Manahakorn. Intrigued? So were we.

    Cut,Copy,Paste

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 19/04/2013

» There seems to be an awful lot of copycat cooking in this city, with trends being cut, copied and pasted around town as quickly as you can say, "Thong Lor is just too 2012... I'm moving to Ekamai." However, a new player in the game is Paste, which is bucking the trend and doing its own thing in a modern and innovative way.

    Bar for Bar

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 10/05/2013

» While the traditional Bangkok bar as considered internationally probably needs hosing down at close every night (for a number of reasons), two new venues on the scene are stretching the scope with concepts of their own.

    Viva la brunch revolution

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 16/08/2013

» Bangkok is a city of appearances, both misleading and true. Leaning towards the former, a brunch outing in Thong Lor can be an experience, particularly if you are lacking any corner of the Thong Lor Triumvirate - rich guy, trophy girl, sports car.
