    A Kick of Sanzo

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/03/2017

» Gregory Sanzo, 30, isn't the first foreigner to fall madly in love with our national martial arts to the point of moving here and making a career out of it. But he is a rare interesting one with a lot going on when he sets foot outside the famous Petchyindee Muay Thai Academy where he trains. Before becoming a professional fighter, this Houston native was serious about soccer and music, playing bass in a punk hardcore band under the same label as A Day to Remember, Victory Records. We catch up with the active athlete, musician and entrepreneur to learn about his moves in and out of the ring.

    Bewitched

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/02/2017

» Over New Year's, I watched a local film in Los Angeles that peaked on so many levels. It was called The Love Witch. The story centres around a sensual dark-haired witch, played by the stunning Samantha Robinson (look her up), who uses magic to make men fall in love with her. It's absolutely brilliant. Seriously, go search and watch it. Because not only did we enjoy The Love Witch for its witty commentary on love, sexuality and feminism through the medium of comedic horror, the film left us obsessed with ultra-sassy 60s fashion. Ever since, we've been looking for ways to pay tribute to the Love Witch's style, and what better time to unleash the attitude than during the season of love.

» Heading down to Singapore for the weekend, most of us wouldn't consider activating roaming for three days. Because we're lazy cheapos and our fabulous vacation pics can wait to be uploaded when we're back at the hotel. Or just back.

    That one friend

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 09/09/2016

» This week in Guru, we celebrate the oddballs in our lives. Those people we know who are "a little" off-centre, regular commuters on the road less travelled, you know, the unicorns. Every so often, for selfish reasons, we might wish they were a little more "normal", but always immediately after saying that, we eat our words realising the tragedy we've just described. So let's take some time to identify and appreciate the people who entertain us by just being them. Here are nine of the most common weirdos in any Bangkokian social circle.

» Despite the number of athletic jackets already hanging in your closet, from Harley to Diablo to even Captain effin' Boomerang, the character costumes in the latest David Ayer-DC blockbuster made you want more. It's no help either that globally in fashion, this is the season for jackets. Our advice? Just give into the urge. It's not like they can't be put to practical use. Remember, movie theatres and malls here are freezing.

    Looking the part

» To get us off our lazy bums in this sweltering weather, race organisers have come up with fun runs where there's more merit placed on how good you look than how fast you run. (Seriously who actually cares who wins these races anyway?) Here are the micro races you should be gearing up for this summer and suggestions of what to wear to them to avoid being boring.

    Workin' local

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 08/01/2016

» This is the time of year many of you reset your exercise clocks, which somehow managed to die on you midway through 2015, if not earlier. No biggie. You know the routine: get a new gym membership, set new -- or old -- goals and blow your cash on brand-new athletic gear to get you motivated.

    Wife and child approved

» Tomorrow is Thai Father’s Day, and I’m curious about something: When you’re out tomorrow, “treating” your dad to a feast of gratitude for not giving up on you, who’s driving and who’s paying? You? Mom? Surely not Dad… right?

    Life's a beach

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 11/09/2015

» Relaxation doesn’t always mean doing nothing at a nice hotel. Boathouse by Montara, located on Phuket’s Kata beach, provides enough activities and attractions to keep you from spending your entire getaway in your hotel room. The 26-year-old property, which underwent major renovations three years ago, includes the Boathouse Resort, Boathouse Wine & Grill and the Re Ka Ta Beach Club.
