Stop 3G trials - or else
Database, Published on 09/06/2010
» Your CAT Telecom explained to No 3 yuppiephone firm True Move that it needs to stop its 3G trials or face charges of breaching its concession agreement; the letter came as a surprise, apparently as a result of an announcement by the Magnificent Seven that they probably will not issue any licences for that old, out-of-date 3G telephone operation anymore - but for 3.9G service, about 20 times as fast; member Natee Sukolrat of the National Telecommunications Commission said 3.9G specs should be ready by the end of the year, long before any 3G licence is likely; True Move has been trying out 3G service on the 850MHz spectrum owned by CAT.

The few hopes and many frustrations of a telco boss
Database, Don Sambandaraksa, Published on 16/06/2010
» Everything stopped after the latest round of public hearings. The key points that have led to the delay are the mixed political signals regarding concession conversion (ending 2G concessions and turning them into licenses) and the migration to 3G, and the effect this would have on the revenue streams of CAT and ToT. Then there was the question of the legitimacy and power of the caretaker National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). This had to be referred to the Council of State and things got bogged down there.

» There is a need to restructure the telco industry and move on from the era of concessions and revenue sharing. It should happen now, before the 3G auction, as the cost of proceeding with an auction on top of this regulatory mess now to fix it at a later date will be much higher than a six-month delay today.

Perhaps we can just skip 3G altogether?
Database, Don Sambandaraksa, Published on 18/08/2010
» Should we skip 3G and go straight for 4G? Or do we need to walk before we run and evolve? A couple of years ago, I was all for leapfrogging to 4G. Then, the telcos convinced me that 3G had economies of scale that could not be ignored. But more recently, the technical limitations of 3G are becoming more and more painful as smart phones get smarter and notebooks get more bandwidth-hungry.
