ยป It is not often I can remember where I was four days ago, let alone 44 years, but a sorry-looking diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. The place was jammed with Songkran holidaymakers, but virtually no foreigners. I had only been in Thailand a few days and hadn't a clue what was going on. I had seen people throwing water at one another, but thought maybe it's what they did all the time just to keep cool.
