Stressed? You're having a laugh

» A few months ago, I read a funny post on Facebook about laughing on social media in different languages. Thais prefer "55555" while the Japanese type "www", which is derived from the word "warai". Korean people write "kkkkk", the Spanish "jajaja" and the Portuguese "huehuehue" or "rsrsrsrs". For people in Denmark and Iceland, they use "ha ha, hi hi, hae hae, ho ho, ti hi" while Russians use "haha xaxa, hihi xnxn, hehe xexe" and it is "xa xa xa" in Hebrew. Interestingly, French people laugh "hahaha, héhéhé, hihihi, hohoho" or "MDR" (mort de rire) meaning "dying of laughter".

Animal rights should be human instinct

» Day after day, I hear sad stories about tortured or abandoned animals and shed tears. With a weary heart, I have long hoped Thailand would pass a law to combat animal torture and ensure proper care for animals. Fortunately, the long fight for animal rights is almost over, as the draft law on animal protection passed all three readings by the National Legislative Assembly last week.

Should schools have condom-vending machines?

» Over the past month, one of the most discussed online topics in Thailand is the Public Health Ministry's plan to seek cooperation from the Education Ministry to install condom-vending machines in schools in order to curb teenage pregnancy. The public is almost equally split between supporting and rejecting the idea, but both sides agree that sex education is a better solution. Whether or not the plan will be realised, it is worth discussion and comparison to previous measures to promote safe sex.

» Only about 160km northwest of Bangkok, Bung Chawak in Suphan Buri has almost everything for tourists to enjoy, ranging from a large aquarium, zoo and recreation zone to vegetable farms and a rice mill. A must-see is the Bung Chawak Aquarium, featuring freshwater and marine fish from all over the world. It was established in July 1996 and opened in February 1998 under a project in honour of His Majesty the King.

» Recently crowned a National Artist and once voted Thailand's favourite novelist, Tomyantee is a recognisable name even to those who don't read novels. The recognition from the Ministry of Culture came with cheers but probably without surprise; it was only a matter of time before Tomyantee, a grand dame of letters who's been in poor health lately, was awarded the country's most prestigious artistic honour.

» Shortly after dawn one fine morning during the cool season, a couple from Monaco climbed into a hot-air balloon in Doi Saket district, about 10km from downtown Chiang Mai. Then it was up, up, up to float over the countryside in their rainbow-coloured conveyance, feasting their eyes on the refreshing green expanse of rice fields dotted with villages and Buddhist temples.
