    The sound of silence

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 16/09/2016

» As is true of most horror films, it's the silent, creeping moments of uncertainty leading up to the jumps-scares that create the most suspense, as audiences tense up in anticipation, hoping against hope that the main characters be spared any horrendous fate lying around the corner. Don't Breathe, the aptly named sophomore feature from director Fede Alvarez (who also did the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead), embodies this philosophy to the hilt, taking its audience on a relentless train-ride of white-knuckle tension from start to finish.

With a promise of fun, Suicide Squad is a near-suicide

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 05/08/2016

» For the first 30 minutes or so of its two-hour duration, Suicide Squad genuinely reminded me of the zany, outlandish humour of Marvel's Deadpool and Guardians Of The Galaxy, even if, ultimately, this one is not remotely as good. With zany, self-aware text introductions, a largely 80s-inspired soundtrack, excellent costume designs and enough one-liners to fill a book, Suicide Squad's first act was a fun, neon-splashed ride that made me believe DC's supervillain team-up would -- ironically -- be the comic label's first good film. This all dissolves by the second act, however, as the film begins to disintegrate into predictable, by-the-numbers story complete, with all the pitfalls that held back its predecessors, becoming yet another mediocre entry in DC's cinematic franchise.

    A war worth watching

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 14/07/2017

» Despite being critical and commercial successes upon their release, the Planet Of The Apes reboot franchise -- beginning with 2011's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and followed by 2014's Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes -- never really registered on my radar. I did watch the 2011 film when it was first released, though I didn't find it particularly memorable. I completely forgot about the second, and only realised 15 minutes into War For The Planet Of The Apes that it was in fact the third and closing feature in the series.

Riverdale is nothing like those comics you read as a kid

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 19/05/2017

» Those of us beyond a certain age have most likely heard of Archie comics or at least one of the many offshoots of the Sunday comic-strips such as Jughead, Betty And Veronica or Josie And The Pussycats.

    The fourth dimension

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 01/07/2016

» As online streaming becomes more and more common, cinemas try to come up with enticing methods for viewing a film, something that can't possibly be replicated on a couch at home. SF Cinema recently unveiled its new MX-4D cinemas, the latest in immersive, 4D movie-viewing. Members of the press were invited to one of them last week to watch Independence Day: Resurgence.

What's trending and happening this week

Muse, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 09/04/2016

» 1 In celebration of the Thai New Year, W Bangkok is holding Songkran Splash Away Pool Party on April 13. Held in collaboration with local party collective Kolour, the event will also feature a host of DJs both local and international, who will be laying down the party beats. Tickets cost 900 baht, but early-birds can pick them up for a discounted 700 baht. Arrive before 3pm and you'll even get two complimentary drinks with your tickets. Considering the country's current water-shortage problems, a pool party is probably the most responsible way to get yourselves doused this Songkran anyway.

    High-school trauma, in 13 chapters

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 27/04/2017

» Netflix's 13 Reasons Why -- the rave of Thai and international streaming-service fans in the past weeks -- certainly has the right combination of production values, acting and dialogue to make it a gripping-enough tale to binge on over a particularly lazy weekend. The teen drama-mystery also comes with a message that should be relatable enough to anyone who still remembers what if feels like to be an angst-filled teenager, with all the bad decisions and cruelty (intentional and otherwise) that define the adolescent experience for so many of us.

    Putting financial catastrophe on display

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 15/03/2017

» Can you imagine, Thailand's economy was once recognised by World Bank as the fastest-growing in the world? As tough as it is for younger generations to comprehend, those older than 35 remember a better, more hopeful time for Thailand, tipped to become the Fifth Tiger of Asia, poised to join Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan as Asia's leading economies. Our national economy grew 8-13% annually for a decade between 1985 to 1996, and the income of the average Thai citizen was three times that of someone in China.

    Walk on the wild side

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 09/09/2016

» There are many ways to travel the world. Some people prefer to fly, others drive, while others ride boats, motorcycles or bicycles. But to physically walk around the world? That's not something many people can claim to do. Less than 20, to be specific, according to Meigo Mark, the 26-year-old Estonian traveller who arrived in Thailand late last month, two years and three months since he began his journey from his home country in northern Europe -- all on foot.
