Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 06/09/2017

» Now in its 19th year, Elle Fashion Week returned bigger and longer than ever -- spanning five days, from Aug 30 to Sept 3. Bangkok's symbol of fashion -- the big, white tent -- returned to CentralWorld to give its spectators a taste of the season's upcoming looks, featuring 15 shows and 21 designers. From old guard, established names to brand new labels making their debut, this season was a good mix of flamboyance, as well as sleek sophistication.

    New looks

» Last month, Fashion Field Trip returned for the sixth year to showcase their autumn/winter collections. Held at Sathon's event hot spot Bangkok CityCity Gallery, this year's shows are not the mega-spectacle they usually are, with at most 150 spectators at each show. Still, shows should always be about the clothes, and it's relevant that Vickteerut, Issue and Asava all thought it was appropriate to scale down and return to their roots. In this digital age, it's easy to drift away from the fact that the purpose of shows has always been for press, buyers and VVVIPs of the brand -- not, you know, everyone who owns a smartphone. There wasn't much legroom, with the gallery's small space and even more limited seats, this year, so here's our recap on the industry's big three this season.

» It can be argued that Phuket is a wellness retreat capital of sorts -- with many destinations offering spa and alternative therapies to choose from. There are no shortages of options on the island, but if you are ready to splurge, the latest top-of-the-line name to keep in mind right now is Asaya. Nestled at the recently opened Rosewood Phuket, this is the hotel's very first holistic wellness concept to be launched globally, with more branches to be rolled out at various Rosewood properties around the world.

    An illustrative fairy tale

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 28/07/2017

» The Starbucks at Wang Burapha is bland and uninteresting, but it was not a lost cause to stop for a chit-chat there, as it was the very place that Phannapast "Yoon" Taychamaythakool had sat down to draw her fanciful and otherworldly animals for Gucci. Phannapast's vibrant illustrations of animals wearing Gucci's cruise collection, which she uploaded on Instagram, caught the attention of Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele, and that led to her becoming one of the brand's featured artists last year.

» No trip to the Netherlands is complete without a visit to the tulip fields. And the best place for tulips is Keukenhof, one of the most beautiful spring gardens in the world. It happens that the park, which is located in Lisse, a small village southwest of Amsterdam, is open only from mid-March to mid-May every year. So the good news is you have almost one whole year to plan if you wish to visit this special place during next year’s long Songkran holiday.

    The taste of an estate

» One half of the Dilmah brand — Dilhan Fernando — laughs when asked how he feels about his name being used as part of the moniker of his family's single-origin tea. "I suppose we are used to it," adds the youngest son of Dilmah's founder, Merrill J. Fernando. His older brother, Malik, makes up the other half of Dilmah, named from a combination of the first syllables of both names put together. "But it's a big responsibility because when our own name is there, it means we have to make sure the product is good."

    Winter is coming

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 04/04/2014

» ‘Summer is coming” doesn’t quite have the same ring as “winter is coming”. In fact, it sounds like a sarcastic comment in Thailand, which deals with a climate hotter than seven hells all year long, not to mention our simmering politics, with countless climaxes that result in no change whatsoever. For the unaware, “winter is coming” is one of the trademark phrases from the Game Of Thrones TV series, coined to imply that something dark, frightening and lethal is in the future.

    Reporter royalty

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 01/05/2014

» Very few people have chit-chatted with the royalty of the world, be via a global broadcast or in a private garden, unseen to the public eye. Journalistic requests can open many doors — those of palaces included — but British native Max Foster has never taken this for granted.

    None but the brave

» Like any perfectly-toned and seasoned diver, American athlete David Colturi glibly leaps off the 10-metre platform at Hua Mak swimming pool to execute a couple of somersaults before slicing into the water with a slick barani. He jumps off the high platform as easily as if it were only one metre like any other US national champion can, but the main difference is that he enters the water feet first. To do so is to go against every natural instinct and reflex a normal diver has ever known, as well as to defy all lessons taught and what the muscles have been trained _ and want _ to do. Albeit lesser known, the ability to enter the water feet first effortlessly with such an experienced sleekness is a signifying mark that this is also a cliff diver we're looking at.
